In May of this year I have to decide whether to purchase the extended warranty on my truck. The truck is stock and will remain that way.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I have had them on my previous 2 CTD and they paid for them selves.

You need to do some research..... if you go to consumer reports they have said many times that extended warranties are a very bad investment... . I own 3 3500 dually's 04, 04. 5 and 05. I'm not going to buy it... .

Now on my Honda Goldwing Motorcycle, it came with a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty and for an additional 275 I could add an additional 4 years... no mileage limit... We usually drive them till we get 125K miles and trade... . so this motorcycle will be under warranty most of that time...

IF I could do this with the trucks I would... . My 04 now has 235K miles... and it tows a large trailer all the time... . my costs for upkeep have been about 25% of the costs to own an F550 that we have... .

Hope this helps... . BTW all my stuff is stock... .

Personally, I'm neutral on the extended warranty, but ONLY if the warranty is from the OEM (Dodge or Chrysler)! I've never purchased one, but can't rule out doing so some day. DO NOT buy an aftermarket extended warranty.

It all depends on how much peace of mind you feel you need.

When is a warrantee not a warrantee?, when someone other than DC does the labor. I changed my diff ratio (not DC's problem). When we got in there the carier inner races were spun. Truck has 73k and the engine powertrain 100k warrantee. I took the carrier to DC and only asked them to pay their cost toward the new carrier. They would not because DC did not do the labor.

Let's take this one step further. You have a total diff failure and not near a DC dealer. Someone else does the labor. Guess who is not going to pick up any of the cost?

I did have a VP44 replaced under DC warrantee. It failed in a town that had a DC dealer. I came out ahead between the cost of the extended warrantee and the replacement cost.

However, I would certainly have something in writting that if something happened and you are not near a DC dealer exactely what is going to happen cost wise.

Read the fine print carefully and know what you have read.

I got burned on an extended warranty from Waranty Gold. Their underwriter went TU and I was left with worthless paper. I bought the 7 year 100k 100$ ded from Dodge when I bought my current truck. If I never use it, I'll still be happy.

I don't agree. My warranty credit style card has an 800 # on it I'm supposed to call for roadside service. If I call that and follow their instruction, then it's covered no matter who they tow it to. It's not the warranty holder's responibility to determine if a dealer is nearby; just call and they will take it from there.

Bought one

After internet shopping and a barage of mailed adds I took the internet price on a genuine Max Care Damler-Chrysler

7 yr/ 85k, $100 deduct. to my local dealer. I told him I have this price, $1515, and if he will match it the business is his. His regular price was approx. $500 more but he matched it without a wimper. :)

A failed ECM or lift pump crapping out will put me even and after that it will be a good deal. If I never use it I get my money back and that is a great deal.

The warranty on my 1992 bought 3 Getrag trannys so that was an excellent deal for me.

I am done worrying about it now.

I bought the 5/100 extended warranty from my dealer just before I hit 50,000 miles. I haven't been sorry. The warranty cost a bunch ($2,900) but I think it could've been negotiated downward. Still, I've used up most of that replacing ball joints, u-joints, pulling the instrument panel out to fix a heater blower problem, etc. I'm glad I bought it.

That said, I would NOT buy an after-market extended warranty. Iffen it ain't backed by the factory, I ain't interested in it. However, Grizzly has an interesting suggestion, which is buy the ext. warranty early on when negotiating power is strongest. I bought mine right before the new truck warranty ran out. The dealer guy knew I'd bite and so wouldn't negotiate.

If you go to Anchorage Chrysler Dodge, DON'T BUY IT! They'll do their best not to honor it. At these kinds of dealers, your warantee isn't worth the paper it's printed on. I hate the dealer in Anchorage! Hopefully the dealer in Kenai will take care of you...

Paladin1911...
I have been dealing with Anchorage Chrysler Dodge since 1980 and have had excellent service from them. They treat me well and have gone out of their way to make me happy and the problem corrected.
I wonder why you have problems.

Thats probably why. You have bought trucks from them. I bought mine at Dave Smith's in Idaho before I moved up here. Anchorage Dodge treats me like a second-rate citizen. They tried to blame my rail pressure sensor going out on my Quad Commander (which I use as a stand-alone gauge, with no box). They even implied they could have my warantee voided for my entire fuel system. It took me being a real ***** for them to fix it under warantee. have taken my truck in twice for low fuel pressure (observed on my FP gauge)and both times I was told that fluctuating between 2-8 psi is normal. So I have given up on that, I'll just put an FASS and be done with that issue. They will probably have my warantee voided for sure based on installing that!

I don't think I should have to argue to have my warantee honored.

The best time to buy extended warranty is at the time you buy the truck and only from Chrysler. The price of the warranty is also highly negotiable. I got mine for half price.
