I made the decision to be self insured when it came to an extended warranty. since buying my truck new ... I have been saving $100 a mth. So I now have about $2,000 in the bank to be used for sudden emergency events. I am still putting the money in. Havent needed it yet thank you God but it is there. I feel better about paying myself from the first day knowing that after the third year I would be on my own. The money is mine, it is making interest and there will be no sudden expense worry. Just my opinion.
Your view is my default position on just about everything I buy and I agree 99. 9%. This particular situation is unique in such a way that it's tipped the weight of the decision to buy the MaxCare plan. The reason is twofold -- first -- using the link above you can get it cheap. 2nd, because it's a Chrysler contract, you're treated like gold at the dealership. Even a rental car is free -- even for maintenance (i. e. oil changes, tire rotation or whatever you want them to do). Lastly, you can get a refund for any unused portion if you trade / sell the vehicle.
Again -- I'm 99% against these by nature -- this is just a very special case that warrants investigation. One exception -- If you drive your truck more than 30k miles a year -- it's not an option. You'll "outdrive" the warranty before you get to make use of it.
