Has anyone ever seen an external trans filter for the automatics? I figured with all the aftermarket parts out there, this might be one of them. Im looking at a by-pass filter for the oil system and a 2 micron fuel filter and was wondering about the transmission, but never see one???

there are some companys that offer them, i even think you could use the amsoil oil bypass if you needed to. but the more important thing is getting rid of heat.

There really isn't much need to further filter transmission fluid, it is a closed system. Like DP stated, heat, not dirt is what kills automatics. As long as you don't overheat it, many manufactuers these days leave auto transmission's sealed for life, no need to change ever. The big three truck builders have us changing pretty often, knowing the trucks are getting worked and over worked in many cases. Keeps warranty claims down not only by keeping the fluid fresh but they will deny you if you do not change at the prescribed intervals.

On the subject of trans heat, is the stock trans cooler ok or is there something in the aftermarket that works better and not a pain to install?

Trans Filter

I think a external filter is great for extra filtering for in case the transmission starts to go, you don't pump as much metal and materials into the trans cooler, BD diesel has one thats nice.
