Browning A-bolt/muzzle brake question

I don't know much about them, but I picked up a Maxtor at Costco. I had a very annoying, though not real serious, bug in my computer a few weeks back and got worried about loosing all my digital photos. I turn off the external drive unless I am loading or syncing it. I also turn off my internet connection and do a virus and spyware scan before turning it on. Paranoid? Heck yeah! I think they're a good idea too for leaving in a hurry in an emergency, or locking up in a fire safe when away on vacation. They're so cheap now that you can get a huge storage capacity at a reasonable price. I wonder if you can run your whole computer off an external, thus have your OS on it if you need to switch computers?

I am planning on getting one also, mainly as a backup.

I don't think you could run your whole computer off of it. The computer will see it as a USB Storage device not as the main hard drive. Also running through the USB, I think they are kind of slow.

1) IOMEGA is a good company. They are pioneers in the external storage business.

2) They make great backup devices and augment your internal storage.

3) They are slower.

4) Just remember that in a fire safe, in the event of a disaster it still gets very hot and we are dealing with electronics. If you want to be really safe, a safe deposit box is best.

I went to best buy and found a 60 gig for $69 on sale, don't remember the name but it is USB powered that makes it easy to carry on the road. I use it for file backup and movie storage and it's full now. If money is not big deal get a 100 gig.

I just burn them to a DVD. I think they hold 4gig. Even with my Cannon 8meg camera, that is a lot of pictures!

I heard that CD roms burnt at home last only 10 years and DVD should last longer.

I just got a AcomData 250 Gig firewire hard drive at Comp USA for $104 minus a $25 rebate. It doesn't have backup software, but my laptop came loaded with it. I thought it was a great deal and you can file for the rebate online at the Comp USA website - no mailing in receipts!
