2 Hours to go

"Stage 1 type power upgrade"

I'm in the process of building a set of B1B Quickspool and B2 twins and was wondering which external wastegate to use. I want to be able to tune my twins and really need some advise. I will be using mach 3 edm's for daily drivers and mach 6's for competition. I hope soon to have a Diesel Dynamics cam and Formula 1 O-ringed and ported head. Any suggestions on wastegate type, size, specifications, and vendor would be would be greatly appreciated.

I think the Turbonetics Delta Gate "Mark II" or "Racegate" would be more than enough for your setup. It's the one I have and plan to use on my setup... . whenever I finish it. They go for about $430 new... . I bought mine used for around $300.

Here's the racegate:

There are a few folks running the Turbonetics 'NewGen'. It's a completely new design and is lightyears beyond pretty much anything on the market. It's a LOT of bread, though (it's made with inconel/stainless... . ). I think it's a bit overkill, but overkill is seldom a bad thing. I really like the way the valve operates... . it should be VERY free flowing... even more so than the Racegate.

Here's what the NewGen looks like:

One of my wastegates is the deltagate. I really like it ,works well and is very adjustable. Check Piers site he has a trick wastegate setup.

I have used two diffeernt brands of 2 bolt flange wastegates- they both warped.

I think for serious fuel/ heat, you need to go 4 bolt.

Did the wastegate itself warp, or did your flanges warp?

I have seen some people cheese out and use 1/4" or similar thickness for the flanges.

IMHO, you need at least 3/8" stock to make your flanges... .

Here is a pic of my Exstreme Billet Waste Gate put in at Piers it aint cheap either, but works great and real easy to adjust

WOW!:--) That setup is what I have been looking for. What mm size is that wastegate? Is it mounted to your exhaust housing of your top charger? That setup is really clean and professional. Piers doesn't list an external wastegate on their site. I also contacted them a while back and they said they now just use the internal wastegate on their secondary hx-40. Thanks for the reply.

Meacham The Extreme gate that Scott uses is just like the one I used on my first set of Twins, what I did was buy (2) TO3 flanges and built a spacer between the manifold and the turbo then vented it to the big turbo's face to drive it harder... . yes it needs this. If you need parts I'd say call Piers, if you need pics I'll send them to you. This is the disadvantage of the B turbo's but that will be cured soon!

Jim

Meacham, yes it is mounted to a 90% elbo wich is welded to the snail like Jim said call piers again he should be able to get you what you need.

Sleddy, I know, it didn't happen but the pic was before we even started the motor, its been heat wrapped and hand torqued away as far as possible.

Jim, I would be intrested some photo's of how you plumbed it into the larger turbo, I am considering that route as opposed to just sending to the atmosphere.

BBD

It's in my readers rigs along with other of the original build up, hopefully I'll replace them with new ones soon... :)

BBD,, Wastegated on the Side of the Exhaust housing?

Somebody must be smokin' some whacky weed, 'cause that is torture on any type of aerodynamics in the housing.

Ever rolled down your window at 120MPH?

Wastegating to atmosphere? I have the same opinion about that.

I think it's much more efficient to wastegate with a 3-4" extension between the manifold like Jim is doing. (Mark Kendrick was doing something right)

To waste into lowpressure turbo...

Just as long as you are keeping an eye on how much pressure the lowpressure turbo is making... it makes a quick turbo system. :D

Actually it was Pias Bell that came up the idea a long time before we started using it or stoled it..... depends on how you look at it.

Thanks for the clarification Jim.

First time I ever saw it was at Mark's shop, and he talked about it like it was his idea.
