Competition SuperCharger Efficiency from Kenne Bell

Competition Stupid question.

OK, so I'm going to need an external wastegate. But I'm confused as to how they are plumbed.

For example, the picture from Piers' Site shows this:

http://www.piersdiesel.com/DodgeExtWG.htm

But you can't see how it's plumbed as far as where it dumps! Doesn't there have to be another mini-downpipe from the WG to the main downpipe?

How does the Piers system plumb?

How could/would you plumb in another external WG, like a Tial or Turbonetics unit? I'm thinking I want a 40mm gate.

I'm worried about "wg cycling" for lack of a better term. I think this might happen you have a huge WG. Boost comes up, WG opens, boost drops down, WG closes-- and it cycles back and forth. Do wastegates open incrementally, or is it 100% open or 100% closed?

Does anyone have pics of their external WG setup?

I'd like to talk wastegates!

Best thing on a turbo

Go to our web site, and check out the Turbonetics WG we use...

For twins, it is critical, and if you are trying to maximize the spool up, and then reduce the drive pressure, the WG is the only way to do it. The factory wastegates are too small, and hard to tune.

Sorry Justin, I don't think anyone is going to give out that info. The PDR gate works and works well to the tune of pushing my B/B to 37 psi, drive pressure is 1 to 1 till 75 psi, at 80 it's just over 80..... long ago proven system.

If you want to look at my old setup it's in my readers rigs, it will show you the by-pass gate setup!

Jim

I don't see the secrecy if it something you're trying to sell-- I'd like to see how it works. I don't see a provision for it to dump into the downpipe, like on your old rig.

Personally, I think a divorced gate is a GREAT idea on ANY truck. You could probably take a stock charger pretty far after you relieve the back pressure.

Scott, I've been looking closely at the T-netics gates. They appear to be very high quality, and Pius recommended one to me. I'm just trying to figure out how I am going to execute the idea.

I also have to account for getting the manifold and gate plumbing by Dan Swain. Will this affect anything?

Can I weld to the cast manifold?

Justin

The external WG plumbs into the pipe that connects the turbine discharge of the top turbo and the turbine inlet of the big turbo...

This way - whatever amount of exhaust is being bypassed through the wastegate will be fed into the big turbo to help light it off...

The picture you referenced shows how the WG's inlet is sitting atop a pipe welded to the ATS manifold... so the WG will bypass a portion of the exhaust that would normally be feeding the top turbo and directing it towards the bottom turbo. VERY few (diesel) people are dumping their WG's to atmosphere or into the downpipe...

External WG's will slowly open... but that depends on how you have them adjusted, how much/little boost pressure you're feeding it and how heavy a spring you are running inside it...

Most wastegates are very durable and most are rebuildable if they do wear out...

I like Turbonetics' Racegate... I've used them in turbo gassers and bought one for my twin-turbo setup that should be finished in the next decade or two...

I'm just curious (and learning) But wouldn't dumping to the down pipe create more of a heat problem from the fresh oxygen combusting with unburnt fuel on a heavily fueled machine? Even if it doesn't pose a problem, I would still like to know if it causes an after affect.

My best advice for anyone doing this, is to rig a turbine drive pressure gauage, and a boost gauge, (2 for twins) and use the info to tune from.

Seat of the pants won't cut it.

Best secret of the deal? Make the WG able to limit the max opening. I have put limiter screws in to keep from dumping TOO much when it pops. Watch your drive to boost ratio.

Someone needs to make a simple kit for this deal. I do like the Turbonetics Racegate, because of the port size and it has good flange sizes.

If you can pony up the bones it's one slick piece.

It's what I run in my twins and quite a few of my customers have gone to them as well.

The Racegate is still an extremely nice piece and I have had excellent luck with them

I'd sooner buy two Tial 38mm gates at $215 a piece!

the new gens are sweet, but I'm all about bang for the buck... I'm running a Tial 38 in conjunction with a ported stock internal wastegate... if the Tial isn't enough, I'll still have the internal gate to mess with. it'll take more tweaking, but $500 buys a lot of tweaking time, and I think I'll have as much or more bypass ability :D

Just got mine. $305 for a new on on eBay. Almost didn't get it. First time I had a problem with a seller. Didn't want to send it. Had to file a complaint with PayPal. After they froze his checking account I got it 3 days later. Guess he didn't get what he expected for it.

Must have 'fallen off the truck'.

Nope, new in box, nothing opened.

Like I said earlier, was lucky to get it. This guy scammed several other buyers also. They still haven't got anything from him.

He got booted from eBay. Only way I got my item was after PayPal froze his checking account. Took over a month to get it.

I've done over 100 transactions on eBay without any problems at all. Thought it was about time I got burned. Guess not yet.

I'm glad you didn't get screwed on that deal...

I usually waste so much time researching the seller that the bidding on the item ends before I'm done. :)
