I'm adding Geno's transmission filter for the NV4500 which add 8oz (1/2 quart) to the capacity of the transmission. I bought a gallon of Syntorq and I was wondering if I'd do any damage to just add the whole gallon instead of just the 3qts(specs) + 8oz for the filter.

I know lots of guys think 3 qts for the NV4500 is not enough so this should remedy to problem.

Did they change the fill spec? My 5 sp has always taken 4 qts to fill and I don't have the added filter you do. I think if you install the filter and put in the whole gallon of Syntorq you are going to be 8oz UNDER filled.

Overfilling is a bad idea, as tempting as it is to do so. Overfilling can cause the oil to foam, simply because of the level reaching a certain point on the rotating gears that makes the oil thrash around a lot more. And when it foams, it breaks down easier, and fails to maintain the necessary film between gear surfaces and contact points. One of the first things my favorite uncle taught me when I was little. I believe it still holds true today.

Sled Puller-

The fast coolers are nice, but WAY too pricey for a piece of Al. I don't haul anything heavy so I don't need the cooling capacity. Besides, most guys who have transmission gauges say they don't get very hot anyway. Perhaps when I have some $$ to toss away.

Pricey perhaps,(try to get a set made) but definately not "tossing away" money.

If the search worked, I would suggest a look in the past on NV 4500 failures.

A rebuild company in Texas claims they are their hottest seller.

If you don't over power it, and keep you lube changed, it should last you a long time.

Guys,

I just replaced my NV4500 with a NV5600.

I chipped an input shaft tooth just putzin around with a 20,000 pound gooseneck. I had my PE COMP OFF and a stock clutch. Needless to say, the NV4500 is "Whimpy" atleast when ya sit it next to a NV5600.

The 6-speed is nearly TWICE as big as the 5-speed. and nearly twice as heavy.

The 5-Speed is sensitive to the fluid you put in it, just fill it full, and drive it with a smile.
