Hey all, havent checked in for awhile. Ive always had trouble with getting my NV 5600 into reverse. Thats the only problem. Im gonna try the extra quart of fluid through the top plate. Anybody had any luck with this? Also, do I need to worry about a gasket on the top plate? Input much appreciated.

I don't think an extra quart will help shifting into reverse but one of the prime rebuilders, Standard Transmission in Ft. Worth, TX recommends using an extra quart for improved lubrication. IIRC I had to stop in neutral sometimes and briefly let the clutch pedal out enough to spin the pilot shaft in order to shift into reverse. I liked the NV-5600 I had in an '01. It was very durable but it never shifted perfectly.

I added an extra 3qts in mine last fluid change, but I did add trans coolers as well. Didn't help the shifting any in my case, but I'm hoping it will extend the life of the transmission... .

My truck has always had some difficulty going into reverse. Until recently I had a new clutch installed by a good friend and top notch mechanic. Now I can barely get in reverse and have trouble just getting it in gear sometimes. From what I have been able to find there is not much that can be done to solve this problem. If I am wrong mabe someone will post the cure. WBodine

The NV-5600 has most of the characteristics of a truck transmission. It usually shifts better if the driver shifts slowly, pausing in neutral between gears and often requires spinning the input shaft a bit before shifting into first or reverse. Some claim theirs shifts smoother than that but mine never did.

WBodine, yours sound a little more difficult than normal. I wonder if your clutch is not fully releasing, dragging just a bit. A bad pilot bearing/bushing could cause that, I think.

An alternative method of adding fluid to the NV5600 is through the top PTO bolt.

Might try a different transmission fluid. Some others have had good success with different brands of lubricant. I have used Pennzoil Synchromesh and Amsoil - seemed like the Amsoil worked a bit better for me.

jusgt a thought, try unbolting your clutch slave cylinder, leave the rod out and use a screw driver driver into the opening and then go under the hood and have some one watch the fluid reservoir and then push the S/D in and out a few times and see if their is any air bubbles coming out. also you can hold the slave cylinder down below the line level and tap the line up and down, this will start to move any air that might be trapped. How any air gets in there is a puzzle to me,but it does happen. If you "bleed" the air, you might geta little more trave, or an easier pedal.

The 5600 in my 02 is the best manual transmission I ever owned. I have to change the fluid in it at about 30K miles. It starts getting hard to shift hard, especially 1st and reverse. There are numerous discussions (and arguements) about the best fluids for the 5600, but the stock fluid works best in mine.

If your having some shifting issues, give some thought to the location of the shifter pivot mechanism.

There is some slop in the locating pins, I pulled and relocated mine when topping up the transmission fluid and it made a huge difference in shiftablility.

By relocating, I mean holding some tension on the shift plate (pulling/pushing it forward or backward) as you tighten the bolts.

I'd guess mine has 0. 030" slop or so, and like I said pushing it from one extreme to the other made a big difference in shift performance.
