I know injectors are on the way, but are the cats to blame for this eye burning type exhaust? The kind the stays on your jacket for hours? My old 6. 9L has a very pleasant smell, whereas this cummins is putrid. At work we had an isuzu that did the same, and had a cat.

What else would cause this type of exhaust?

I am suspect of a leaky head gasket. I had an isuzu pup w/ a gas motor that would randomly belch out extra stinky ,foul smell and i was almost certain it was only the cat but after a few more tanks of fuel it let go in a gas station parking lot idling and man did it stink.

Nope, not that. I am talking about diesel haze. Not coolant haze. Once warm the exhaust is like an overburned fuel smell. Hard to describe except it will make you close your eyes and pull you shirt over your face.

A nasty blue haze? Injectors would be my primary suspect. Not spraying in nice or at the rite angle or something like that. I don't know how to explain it but put new injectors in and then tell us what happens.

I had that problem with my lst gen, turned out to be a stuck injector. Injectors overhauled, smelled good again.

I have that problem w/ 60 series Detroits at work and we've tried everything. It's the only motors exhaust that will make my eyes burn, can't explain it. Injectors, valve adjustments, nothing works, and they don't have cats. Amazingly enough even the newer ones ('05 and up) w/ Cooled EGR still have exhaust that burns the eyes.

A chainsaw will burn your eyes bad with certain types of oil. are you running any fuel or oil additives? ps I run Amsoil Dominator and and have no more burning eyes w/ my chainsaws etc. , they are 2 stroke of course . Just a thought. Merry Christmas!

I have 215 HP injcetors ready to go in, just waiting, waiting, and waiting on the hard to get . 020 copper seals. I will also get some 181dv's before I install them.

Lastly I would like to find a TDR member near Erie, PA I could pay to set the timing. I don't really trust my local mechanics as you can't tell if they will be honest when you say you want 15 dgrees, they may put it where they want.

I found that the new fuel and cold weather have combined to make both my 01 Dodge and 03 Ford stink bad. I think it must be something in the new fuel... .

typicaly the eye burning comes from nox. nox is mixing with the water in your eyes and forms a mild acid. nox is produced by high heat which can be from a lean condition. i dont know exactly what would be causing the smell. but anytime i work on our old tractor with no cat my eyes burn and water real bad.

Whats so hard about finding them? Just have to ask the right people. ;)

B,C Series 5. 9L Injector Installation Kit (6)

I ordered 2 kits plus shipping and it was still cheaper that Cummins.

I had major exhaust odor this summer. All my passengers were complaining quite a bit and rightly so. Thought it was the fuel i was running but it lasted weeks. Finally tinkering under the hood, revved the engine by hand and noticed smoke coming from near the turbo.

Turned out one of the bolts for the downpipe had disappeared. No more smell in the cab. ULSD definitely seems to have more punch from the exhaust than good B100. I greatly prefer the smell of soy to ULSD.
