Hey All, looking too find the best price on the ez box. I own a 98. 5 24 valver and also like too know if this box makes a noticable difference and if so does it hurt the automatic transmission's. TIA:confused:

didn't hurt mine.........

Worked fine with just the EZ. I would highly recommend gauges if you are going to start bombing though. Helps monitor what's going on with the mighty cummins.

And yes it makes a big difference. They claim a 60 hp gain but in reality it's about 40 in the power band.

Beware though the EZ is usually the tip of the ice berg. Once you see the ptotntial of this motor you will want more.

Great service and best price I found.

I have a stick so I don't know about the auto, But, my truck pulls hills in 5th gear that required 3rd before. The engine runs smoother and the fuel mileage is up by almost 2mpg. :)

We towed the 5ver in the Texas Hill Country during Thanksgiving for the first time since adding the EZ.

Pluses:

1. Fuel mileage up 10%.

2. On hills that were 5th gear with speed decreasing, we're now accelerating at 65 MPH in 6th! :D

3. In conjunction with BHAF and 4" exhaust, maximum EGT's down 200 degF (1250 before, 1050 now).

4. Passing those PSD's and DuraMaxes!

Minuses:

1. On setting 3, it's a little smoky - we get a good puff of black smoke on every shift, just like the big rigs! (Of course, to some, this might be a plus!) Keeping the 5ver clean might be a PITA now. :( I guess I could move it to setting #2 - NAAA!

CLEANER, I concur with most everything in the preceding posts, the EZ definately makes a big difference... it is not at all subtle; feels like a different truck.

RustyJC, you mentioned that your truck in a little smokey with the EZ on setting 3. I noticed the same thing when I first installed mine, I was even considering knocking it back to level 2 to decrease the smoke a little, but never got around to it. Anyway, the truck does not smoke anywhere near as much now as it did when I first installed the EZ. I read somewehere on the boards about the ETH having an "intelligent" ECM that was capable of detecting the presence of the EZ, and would adjust itself over time to compensate for the extra fuel. I don't know about the smart ECM business, but my truck definately does not smoke near as much as it did. I was playing around on my commute this morning, trying to see how much smoke I could produce by hammering it at low boost levels. The best I could do is blow a fairly innocent looking puff of smoke, not even enough to be objectionable! The truck does not seem to have lost any power, just lost some smoke! Has anyone else with an EZ noticed a decrease in smoke after a couple thousand miles? I'm going to disconnect my batteries this evening, it is my understanding that this will cause the ECM to reset itself to the default setting. I will report in tomorrow what effect, if any, this has on smoke and power.

Go with Barry...

I met him at he Texas Rally this year at Okie's camper, and he is a gentleman to the fullest.

If you choose not to go with him, try calling Stefan K of DTT. Their service is 2nd to none.

RedRam1........

It may just be the cooler temperatures. Mine doesnt smoke that much even with the DD2's. When it gets warmer though look out. I rigged a switch on my EZ to go from 1 to 3. As I have the bigger injectors I don't need to drive around on 3 all the time anymore. Level 1 adds fuel at 20# of boost so it's there when I need it.

CLEANER, I took my EZ off today and made her somewhat stock for a trip to the dealer. I thought the EZ wouldn't make that much difference because of my injectors. WRONG, What a difference. You get used to the power after a while. When it's gone you sure notice though.

Big White Beast

Garrett... .

I'm curious. When you took off your EZ, you also removed your boost module? I've been afraid that just the DD2's alone would set off overboost codes in the computer and also cause high egt's.

Did you notice anything like this?

thanks... . Joe

Removed my waste gate mod too......

Otherwise it would have set off a boost code. DD2's with only 18# of boost is no joy. EGT gauge moved faster than the boost.

When I hooked my waste gate spring back up I must not have gotten it tight enough as I could only make 24# of boost. Terrible top end. Just seemed way less responsive. Now I"m really curious about the larger turbos and more air. Adjusted the spring after it cooled off. Should be fine in the morning.

Big White/Chuck3,

Temperature may indeed have some effect, however, in my case I don't think the changing seasons are what has killed my smoke. I installed my EZ back in the spring (I'll have to check my records to see the exact date), and the truck smoked like hell; it hardly smokes at all now, and it's been in the mid 70's here in Gerogia for the last couple of weeks. I'm sure the temp. is within 10 degrees or so of what it was when I first installed the EZ.

I notice you guys have ETC's. I remember reading somewhere that the ETH ECM could adjust itself to compensate for the extra fuel supplied by the EZ. I don't know the differences in the ECM's, but have read that this behavior is peculiar to ETH's. If this were true, it looks like my truck would have lost power along with the smoke, but this does not seem to be the case.

Any one else with an EZ equipped ETH noticed dimenished smoke over time?

Just guessing.........

Winter fuel maybe. Or have you used any additives? They supposedly help control smoke.

Somehow I have a really hard time believing that the ECM is that smart. But you never know,

Garrett

Just to clarify my previous post, I see more smoke when towing than running unloaded.

Running unloaded and standing on the throttle from a low boost situation, I get a moderate puff of black smoke as the boost climbs, then a light haze that's usually visible only at night in the headlights of the cars disappearing behind me! :D

When towing, I get a healthy black "puff" at every shift while accelerating, then it cleans up pretty well pulling up through the gears. After about 250 miles of towing, though, I did notice a light black film down the right side of the 5th wheel. Nothing I can't live with - it's worth it for the improvement in performance!

Rusty

Garrett,

I don't think winter fuel is the answer either. My smoke has been missing for a couple of months now. The "smart ECM" business sounds a little fishy to me too, but it's the only thing I can think of to explain my truck's behavior. The missing smoke does not bother me, I'm just curious about the cause.

I would still be interested in hearing from others who have been running the EZ on an ETH for a while. I'm going to disconnect my batteries overnight tonight... . intended to last night, but forgot.

If I get time, I will try to find the thread here in the TDR that discussed ECM differences.

Rusty,

I'll bet your smoke clears up in a couple of months, towing or empty.

I pulled my farm tractor (~12K with trailer) the day after installing my EZ, it layed down a tremendous smoke screen when running through the gears, and yes, it was a lot smokier than empty. I got a lot of dirty looks from fellow motorists!

I can pull the same load now with probably about 25% of the smoke, still more than empty though.

I have the EZ for almost 10 months now and with DD1's for about 3 months my truck smokes really bad until boost gets over 15 PSI even with cooler (25 degree) weather, maybe something is wrong with my truck.

I'm sorry, but here's my newness coming forward. How does the EZ Edge work, and is it hard to install? I've been reading about these products and kind of understand the benefits, but can't figure out how it's installed on the truck. Is this the beginners route to go for Bombing, or should I start with something else? I've lasted 4mos without catching the bug, but I can't wait any longer.

Thanks

Paul

Paul,

The EZ is the easiest upgrade you can do. It just plugs in and gives you 60HP. Or so they claim. It tremendously improves the performance though. Most people claim a little better mileage too.

Gotta say that if you do any upgrades get gauges first. It's always best to keep an eye on what your truck is doing.

Dhatfield, What type of air filter are you using? That might help a little. Are you making smoke all the time or only at WOT take offs. Mine can lay a good burst if I push it. Even in cooler weather.
