Towing and modified transmissions

Need New Trailer Tires

I asked this question elsewhere, but with no takers, so I'm trying again here...

I used to run my EZ with the boost elbow on lvl 4 with no problems towing my 5er (11,500lbs approx, GCW 20,000 lbs approx. ). After reading about the "non-documented" lvl 6 setting, I just had to try it.

Empty, my EGTs, at highway/Interstate speeds (up to 75mph or so) run right around 700*F (taken pre-turbo). When I push it, I can get 34-35PSI of boost, and temps around 900-1000*F.

I had to get horse feed, and was towing my flatbed bumper hitch, total weight approx. 6000lbs (GCW around 14,500lbs), and w/o 'gunning' it, I saw temps go up to 1100*F (or at least close to it) on some of the hills.

My question: Has anybody pulled a 5er with the EZ on lvl 6? If so, what have been your experiences? Given that the temps got up to 1100*F pulling only 6000#, I guess there's a good chance of temps going over 1250*F with the 5er? Would it be prudent to back the EZ off to lvl 4 when pulling the 5er?

Rusty, I think he said he is pre-turbo. How do you get an EZ to level 6 and what is suppose to be the HP gain. I installed my EZ just like it came out of the box... ... ... ... . and, I would like a "little more".

You're right, Barry, he did - when he edited his post 2 minutes after I posted the question. That's the problem with being able to edit a post after someone has responded - it makes our questions look pretty stupid at times.

If "::: :XX" is lvl 4 on the EZ, "::: XX:" is lvl 6.

And yes, I did edit my post, and added the pertinent info to my signature...

Anybody up to answer the questions? :D

Am I sure the gauge is 'right'? How could I be...

But they seem consistent. And revving her up to 34-35PSI does increase the EGTs pretty fast to the 1000*F+ range; although I haven't tried going beyond 75-80mph yet...

On the Interstate, around 70mph and 1950RPM, I am running around 5-8PSI of boost, and the temps are pretty much within the 650*F to 800*F range. Remember, I am running with the elbow that came with the EZ installed...

I wished I could get mine to go down the road at 70 mph at 7 to 8 lbs. of boost. Mine take 12 to 15 on a good day... ... ... .

It's funny, some folks say they get 1200F with a stock motor and some (like me) can only hit 1000F. I wonder if it's the trucks that are different or the gages?

It seems odd that Cummins would allow them to run that hot.

mosyt get over 1300 stock. wonder if some guages be wrong. i had 1 guage then decided i wanted a 2nd to measure all 6,,,,,,,the 1st would go to 1350 and the 2nd guage i added would be at 1050 or so when the 1st guage be at 1350. took out the 2nd one and replace w/ new and both are within 20 to 40 degrees diff. one reason to have a backup

Mine use to be the same way, but now after 60,000 miles it will cruise at 6-8 lbs. of boost at 70 MPH, if there is a head wind then the boost will climb to 8-10. Things just need to break-in.

?? I could get my Stock '03 over 1100 POST turbo towing 7400lbs up a 6% at 4000' at 65MPH in 70 degree temps.

I can easily get to 1300+ PRE and 1100 POST pulling 13000lbs at 75MPH with my EZ on any setting. Of course I can pull some pretty steep grades doing so.

Mine seems happiest with EZ on 3, and the Boost elbow installed. The extra boost cools the EGT by 150 - 200 degrees at any given loaded speed, as near as I can tell.

In other words, without the elbow with a given load and hill I would back off at say 55 MPH, I would see at 55 with the extra boost lower EGT temps, and would be able to press on to 70 or more before needing to back out of it.

Took the EZ off for my morning drive to work; elbow stayed on. Here's what I saw this way.

Truck empty (5er hitch in bed) with only me (175#) in it.

Interstate at 70mph, 1950RPM, OAT66*F.

Boost around 11PSI (btw. 10 and 12PSI).

EGT around 700*F.

Hitting her from 0 to 70mph, I got a max boost of 29PSI, and a max EGT of just under 1000*F.

Will reinstall the EZ and do the same tomorrow morning (maybe tonight on my way home).
