I have been thinking about getting a Edge Products ez box or a Van Aaken box. Are there other brands that are similar to these timing boxes. Also which one of these are easiest to install? Will I also need to buy a boost module such as the Practical Solutions boost module and elbow kit? Are there other boost modules out there . Does either the ez or va boxes include a boost module? I might also add injecoter but that will probably be later.

Thanks

Ken

Ken,
Like I said in another post. Bully dog has a new box. I guess it installs like the VA,but also has a boost module. They're sending me some info on it.

Ken,
The EZ box comes with a boost elbow. It installs in just a few minutes, plug and play.
Do some research on boxes there is a few out there now. Biggest thing is to determine what you want in your rig. Something with a little pep or a rocket ship? Because the boxes range from mild to wild! Good luck.

I know a few of you have tried both VA and EZ boxes. My main interest is in "unloaded" mpg. My limited testing with one of these boxes (and e-mail from another TDR member who owns the other) suggests that these boxes do not get the 24V back up to the same mpg seen in the old 12V trucks. We were both seeing ~0. 5 mpg or less improvement. If the boxes are trying to still meet CARB standards, then they would be somewhat limited on just how much they could advance the timing, so maybe I was just expecting too much. Anyone with data on unloaded mpg, please log in and post your results!

P. S. - the power is there, just not the improved mpg. And, duh, more power = higher EGT's - take note, don't even consider one of these boxes without EGT guage! EGT's at a given power level, like climbing the same hill on the freeway on cruise control, seem to be lower.

Hope the info is just as good as the gauges they sent you the first time Alex!!!!! #ad

Hehe

Will you have that info Jan 14th? Curious to see what it is, not that I will ever get rid of my PE & EZ combination. But always curious and needing more input! Need more input! #ad
(Just watch Short Circut) Still gonna try the EZ? I'll prolly have 1 of each with me this time.

Man it sure is taking a long time for Jan 14th to roll around... ... ... ... .....

So far... . the EZ is yielding 1. 5 mpg better than the VA on my '99 6sp. 4x4. It's not totally unloaded as it is my work truck... . two tool boxes and always a little junk in the bed, but definitely not what I would consider a "load" either. Still testing between the two. . trying to duplicate conditions as accurately as possible.

jjdiesel, In an earlier thread, Charliep reported "... Returning to SLC from Vegas empty, and back to 69mph, I recorded 20. 0 (EZ) and 22. 2 (VA). "

So, while one user gets ~1. 5 better with the EZ, another gets ~2 better with the VA. And others see changes of less than 0. 5 mpg with the same boxes. I'm still trying to sort out whether these differences are due to differing set-ups (auto vs manual, HO vs non-HO engine, bigger injectors vs stock injectors, etc. ) or, due to the fact that there are several different software versions of the VA but all go by the same name. To add to the confusion, our engines have different software versions programmed into the ECM's.

I hope nobody takes my comments the wrong way - I really appreciate everyone reporting their experiences, especially when their experience is different from what others have reported before. "More power" is much easier to measure than "more mpg". Grab a stopwatch, or visit a dynomometer, and within an hour you'll know if you have more power or not. But verifying "more mpg" can take weeks or months of meticulous note-taking.

OK, everybody, keep those reports coming!
(Marco, if you're holding copies of the timing curves that answer my ponderings, go ahead and share what you know. Don't worry, we won't hack our own ECM's - you'll still be needed!)

Ken,

I put and EZ in my truck and that is all I am running. The performance of that box is Awesome. This box has 3 settings. Currently I am running on the second setting being conservative (until Bill Kondolay fixes up my auto transmission in Feb). For the first week of having this box I had it turned up to the first setting. All I can say is WOW. No joke, when I punch it... I was gone!!

It was kinda funny yesterday my buddy and I kinda raced on the highway. He was driving an F-150 (with a superchip), All I had was my EZ box on the second setting, and my 600lb Polaris ATV in the bed of my truck. After we got on the highway, I pulled up next to him and punched it. I left my buddies F-150 trailing way behind me. He couldn't keep up with me. . Kinda funny if you ask me. . cause he was the one wanting to play games until I jumped on the throttle, then he realized that he couldn't keep up... . LOL.

Him and I were talking about this event after we stopped at our destination... needless to say, he was very embarrassed that I left him way back and he is now in search of a new 2K1 Dodge/Cummins Combo.

So IMO, the EZ is they way to go and it is worth the money.

Kev
Guys. . IMO this EZ box is well worth the money. The VA is a good box. . but I don't think that it has anything on the EZ.

Tell Jamie I said Hi!

Ready for Jan 14th, and then also February! I been watching Gone in 60 Seconds too much lately (awesome on DVD) so even with the cold cold whether I went back to Level II on my PE..... hehe But figure it will snow again and I'll have to turn it off again soon. Anxiously awaiting MORE POWER!!

By the way Merry Christmas.

Kat,
I'm hoping to have the info by the meeting. Bully Dog didnt have too much to say about it, but it's like a VA w/ a boost module. I also contacted Banks, to get some info on their system.

HC..... I remember the earlier thread you refer to. It's all got me wondering as well. It is strange how these readings can be so variable. . but all I can report for a certainty is my own personal experience. I'm kinda a mileage freak myself. . so while I wand good performance I also am not willing to totally sacrafice good mileage. My VA is one of the earlier models. I think the most important thing is to try to keep conditions consistent when comparing these boxes. I will continue switching between the two to see which offers the best overall performance on a consistent basis.
