What does it take to make a truck safe to tow a bigger load.

Megacab owners who tow 5th wheels/hows the trailer clearence?

I have a completely stock CTD 06 3500 DWD. I am pulling a 14K Fiver. Last weekend my wife and a were driving through GA on I-85 with the cc set at 65mph and in tow-haul mode. An 06 F-350 pulled in behind me from an on ramp pulling a fiver that appeared to be the same size as mine. It looked like he matched my speed and set his cc as well. Whenever we would start pulling up a hill I noticed that he would quickly start dropping behind. After about 30 miles he was out of sight. I have 30K on my truck and have not had one single problem with the truck. I have been following the maintenance schedule as directed for towing. I have been averaging about 11. 5 mpg towing and 15. 5 driving to work, about half highway and half stop and go. I almost bought a F-350 and at the last minute I changed my mind, thank goodness! GO DODGE!! CTD

Great story!

If you really want the best of both you could have gotten a F-650 and had the cummins option... hmmm. ford crew cab and cummins. . seems good. I never had an issue with ford as a truck, just the engine sucked. .

Not that it means anything but on my way home from Sacramento, Ca this afternoon I saw 2 new F450's in different spots on the side of the road with the hood up. Hmmm is the 6. 4 yet another folly???

It must be a bad day for the competition! Coming down the I today I saw a D/A 2500 towing a fiver being towed by a wrecker.
As for the Fords, I was following two late model F350s one towing a horse trailer and the other a fiver several years back before I added my #6 plate. I was doing fine on cruise following until we hit some hills and I had to cancel the cruise. On the third hill I pulled out and passed both of them before we topped the hill. Many brag about how Fords pull, but I haven't seen it in the real world.

Fords will pull grades while loaded but their engine computers call for downshifts all the way to third gear or sometimes even to second gear to rev their engine into their torgue band in order to maintain speed with a Cummins in overdrive or direct. The GM Duramax/Allisons do the same thing. I've pulled all day with fellow transporters pulling similar loads and talked with the drivers on the CB to find out why they lagged then caught up on every hill. Regardless of all the bold advertising and hype by their owners V8 diesel engines simply don't make torque at 1600 rpm (or less) like an inline 6.
