This will be my 3rd stock trans in 172,000 miles and I'm fed up.The front pump is leaking and 3rd gear is starting to slip.
I think I will buy a new truck.

But the stock 48RE (I am assuming he has a 48RE) has not proven to be a bad transmission, and certainly not the mythological bad rep Dodge always seems to get.

Three trannies? How is he using it? How does he drive? Without further information I have a hard time blaming the transmission...FWIW.

I know of many stock transmissions that are original that last that many miles and more. Just have to service them. These are stock trucks, not programmed for more HP or 35" tires. The 48re and 47re are decent if built properly. Sounds like you have a bum for a builder. Or you drive it like you stole it.

A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE in a stock slush box and one that is built right!!
You got that right. I had a DTT in my '98.5 and test drove a 2006 w/auto. Slushbox is the word. I did ride in a DTT auto '07 of a member here and it was remarkably better than the stocker or my '98.5. Firm but not harsh and no hunting on surface streets.

i never realized just how "loose" my 48RE is until I bought my Aisin. but, like cerb said, the 14 model has already been to the shop more in 3k miles than the 06 has in 8 years.
I still contend that if anyone ever spent the time and resources to develop a swap kit for the Aisin behind a 5.9, it would be better than winning the lottery!

I don't know about all that, Im pretty happy with my trans, AFTER THE UPGRADE!!

$5k for a trans you will have a hard time breaking or $50k for a truck that MUST go back to the dealer for every little thing. Your choice.

Careful what you wish for. ;)

Hey now!! there is something to be said for the BBQ Exhaust system that you can cook hot-dogs on AS YOU DRIVE!!

Just make sure you DON'T go with a DTT build. I have had nothing but problems with my truck ever since they and their defunct shop(s) got their hands on my truck. I wish I had researched them better before the fact instead of after the misery post build.

Hard lesson learned.
