At work we have an '05 with a 6. 0 in it. I think it's got 9k on it now. Tuesday it goes to the dealer because the turbo is acting funny. , The other tech, (who drives it) said it's more gutless than usual down low, then at 50ish the boost gauge bounces from the bottom to the top, about 40 psi. He says it makes a funny noise too, like it's chuffing. The dealer said they have seen this before, the VG part is not working.

The funny part is I told everybody in the shop the turbo would be the first thing to go bad. I just didn't think it would be this soon! :)

Update! They finally got it in this morning. Called this afternoon to say they couldn't do warrenty work because the warrenty wasn't registered with Ferd. When we bought the truck, Ferd corporate just took over the dealership, due to money issues. They weren't going to give us the trucks (bought 2, 450+550 ). The company owner and general manager went down with a check to talk them into giving us the trucks. Too funny! :D

HMMmm - other brands have registered significant past problems with the Dual Mass Flywheels - but MDC plows on ahead and chooses to use one anyway...

Ford and GM have had their significant issues with Common Rail fuel system design - Ford at horrendous levels - but MDC decides to go the same way, and registers significant similar issues...

Ford is having issues with their variable turbos - and guess what MDC has coming up next for our trucks...

Anyone else see a pattern developing here... :-laf :-laf

Gary,

What/Who is MDC? I'm just asking. I really don't know.

I would imagine that all this new technology is required to meet emissions and the engine companies really cannot help the fact that todays engines are much less reliable/trouble free due to the limitations subjected to them in terms of emissions.

My world would still use the VE and P7100 injection pump with an HX-35 and large injectors and near zero electronic sensors.

Why does my school bus CUMMINS need an alarm/light to TELL me the engine coolant is low? That things gets a bit dirty and goes off when it AIN'T low! I have to visually inspect the coolant each time I drive the bus.

MDC=Mother Diamler Chrysler

I agree on manual, tuneable ;) pumps and big turbos!

The buses have those sensors on there not for you, but for the large butted operator of said bus! :)

Oh... . I have never heard it pronounced like that. Just "DC"

If your going to refer to the parent company and include Mercedes as such why not include all the companies. Call it; MDCDDLSWFTO

 :-laf

Well folks, it came back today. The waste gate (or whatever it is) actuator was bad, and they cleaned up a plug to the ECM. Not bad, only took them a week to do it!

first of all, the Garret variable geometry turbo found on the powerstrokes have about 68 individual sliding nozzels that control the turbo, which make it a very complicated design, the Holset variable geometry turbo has one sliding vane that controls the turbo, the Holset design is much better, not only that but it has a water cooled center cartridge, and a electronic actuator instead of a air operated actuator. the Holset turbo are far better design than the Garret turbos found on the power strokes, i dont think se will see near as many failures as the fords have seen with the new 6. 7L engines.

Mercedes/Diamler/Chrysler since the buyout/takeover of Chrysler by the Germans a few years back...

Officially, it is spelled and pronounced DaimlerChrysler, but the Chrysler is silent. So it sounds like Daimler.
