Back in the 70's I knew a lot of people who were deeply devoted to the "recreational pharmaceuticals" hobby. It wasn't something I was into myself being more the cowboy type, but boy the antics of the stoner crowd could be hilarious to watch when straight and sober.

A long time back I ran across some underground comic books and my favorites were the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers (FFFB) by Gilbert Shelton (think he is the guy who did the "Keep on Trucking" dude with the long legs). The FFFB are so much like some people I have known that it is downright scary.

Over the holidays, I have been reading a large book that has the collected FFFB in it, have laughed so hard that I made myself sick a couple of times. Interestingly, old Gilbert Shelton seemed to be pretty adept at picking up trends. Maybe he was psychic?

- In one strip, the FFFB meet a Mexican witch doctor (brujo?) who helps them get out of Mexican prison with the use of an automatic color copier (strip was from the early 70's)

- In another, from 1975, the FFFB discuss schools using a form of amphetamines to control the kiddoes. This new drug was called RITALIN and as we know is now in widespread use.

- In another, from 1976, Shelton draws a couple of characters called "Nerds" that are dead ringers for the "Noid" character that showed up in pizza ads in the 90's.

If you don't mind a bit of vulgar Cheech-n-Chong style humor, the FFFBs will slay you... .
