too late for me but; get rid of those sealed (maintaince free) batteries that come with your ram, especially if you live in the southwest where it is hot. I had one explode yesterday and did not find it until today. It is unbelievable what damage to the paint, hose couplers, air intake... ..... or anything that is made of metal ... ..... that acid will do. jlazram tucson... ... ... ... As soon as I found the problem I cleaned all affected areas with soda water and rinsed with tap water. Having had time to think; I am now concerened that having sat overnight (or longer) that acid might have found its way into the electrical connections and give real fits later.

Ouch!! Feel sorry for you. one more reason to use optimas ;) Hope you don't have spend too many hard earned buck to fix it

Hoping and assuming your warranty is still valid. Would that type of incident and resulting damage be covered by Chrysler under warranty being that it was a factory battery that failed?

I ask because here in So. Fla it gets hot , maybe not like out west but close.

I would try to keep sealed battreries, because the vented one seem to leak acid all the time with our vibrating cummins. I went to Optimas.

Debrickel... ... I have a optima in my wife's little v-6 chevy and it will almost flip the pick-up over when the starter is hit; being a side mount system it comes loose every 30-45 days though. I ask the dealer I bought it from and he sugested locktite but I'm not sure aout that. The battery is worth the trouble though.

casey... ... ... I know what you mean about the venting batteries (but a lot of cleaning could be for the damage that sealed unit did) so I plan to go with optimas.

robert... ... the truck is an 01 with 42,000 miles so I don't know what chrysler will say; batteries usually go dead, not rupture.

Dan ... . will check the system; the guage in the truck has never given an indication that there is something wrong.

OEM & Optimas

Sorry to hear about your battery exploding. Had to be a hell of a mess to clean up. :( I am in Las Vegas w/100 degree + summers, and my OEM's lasted four years and ten months before they gave out. Didn't explode, just didn't like the fact that they leaked. Cleaned my cables twice with the OEM's and third time upon installing new ones. Put in a set of red top Optimas and glad to have them. No vents. :D Just curious how long they will last in the heat. I figure if it suppose to be maintenance free, completely seal it like the optimas.

Dartman... ... ... My son said he had a optima swell when he had a high compression street rod? I have another truck so I will look further into my options this next week. I just wanted everone to be aware of what happened to my ram. I have had sealed batteries before and usually lost them to heat/age; never had any battery rupture. I may look into a system (plastic battery box) or some way to protect the underneath of my ram. Will post what I did at a later time; not on 911 because the danger is now gone (only the clean-up left).
