I've been having problems with my CD player and was wondering if anyone else has had the same trouble. It doesn't seem to want to play any of the CD's I've burned on my computer and sometimes won't play CD's I've bought. All these CD's will play on my home units so I know they're good. Also, I'm looking to upgrade my sound system and was wondering if anyone has done anything to upgrade their system using the factory unit? I'd like to get new speakers and a sub, but don't know if it's possible with the factory unit. It's not that I'm cheap, I just don't know of anything that will fit the dash as well as what's in it!

J Gort,

My truck is the same as yours and does the same thing with cd's.

If you find the solution let me know.

My son's 2001 playes anything.

My CD player stopped playing ANY CD's about 2 years after I bought the truck. Dealer replaced entire unit under warranty. No problems since then and it plays the CD's I burn on my computer.

Jack,

Some time ago I found a site that listed all the TSB's for the all diffferent truck models and I thought I saw one for a CD problem, I had bookmarked the site, but since then I've had to re-format my hard drive and now I can't find the site. I'll continue to look and let you know if I find it and it helps.

I got my 98. 5 used, first time I put a store bought CD in it spit it out and said "Error" Hasn't done that since (2 months). It seems to spit out CDRs about 85% of the time, some won't work at all.

My wife brought home some borrowed CDs from work for a long drive on a Sunday. To my delight, the CDs she brought were CDRs and I figured I could listen to the football game no problem this way :D. No luck, for some reason when football is on, CDRs play fine . Anyway, some will work some won't, I'll find out the brand of the CDRs that seem to work, at least intermitantly.

If your player isnt playing the store bought CD's, most likely your laser is probably dirty or tired. There are other causes,,, but either way of a cleaning doesnt do it, pick up and new deck.

As far as CDR are concearned, it depends on how you recorded them. Forget about CDRWs, most players dont read them. CDRWs are another whole ball game.

CDRs must be record in a one shot deal and "closed" during that recording session. And since they are recorded differently than the store bought CDs, you are better off recording them as slow as you can to make the "1" as dark as possible. CD's you "burn" literally use the laser to burn dark spots on the CD's, the faster the CD spins the lighter the spot. So if your CD player's laser is a bit weak or not as tolerante... it maynot play well.

J Gort, I had the same problem with my 2002. Some burned CD's would play some would not. I was a little disappointed with the factory stereo. So I went had a Clarion DXZ615 installed and could not be happier. The sound is so much better than the stock system. Both CD's and FM sound great. I also added a JL Audio Stealth box, which replaces the front center seat. The sound is great. Someday I will probably replace all the speakers, but for now it sounds good. Night and day difference from the stock radio/CD player. Mike

Mr V,

How well does that Clarion unit fit? Is it in the dash where the factory unit was? What amp are you using for the JL Sub?

J Gort, the Clarion fits flush with the dash. The installer used a black plastic plate which fits behind the dash trim. The size of the unit is smaller in height, so the plate fills in the gap. Looks very good. The amp that I am using for the sub is a Cross Fire TEK Amplifier, model TEK752, 300 watts. Mike.

JGort,

I asked the same question about 2 weeks ago on TDR and got an awesome wealth of answers and info.

I still haven't found out what the magic is with getting the player to play burned CDs. I've tried it at 1X, 2X, and 4X, performing the "test", not "testing", Imation, TDK, Memorex, and all sorts of raindances on the desk while they're burning to no avail. Some work, some don't.

The bizzarest thing is, I burned a jazz compilation, the CD burner spit it out with some sort of error about 95% of the way through, so I thought it was toast, put a big X in magic marker on it and brought it downstairs. Well... it ended up in the truck on accident so I tried to play it and WHALLAH, it played just perfectly, all the tracks. Of course I don't listen to jazz in the truck.

I'm going to ask the dealer about it and try some different players in trucks on the lot and see what happens.

We'll get to the bottom of this.
