How Reliable Is A '90 CTD W/O Intercooler?

Not open for further replies.
Hey Guys,
Went to my snowmobile races last weekend and seen an unusual site. It's a 1991 3/4 ton 4x4 intercooled, Crew Cab yup 4 doors, diesel. It's at a dealer and I want to buy it. They said it isn't custom. It was specially built by dodge for the army. Anyone ever seen one before? It looks sweet. The owner that had it put pl/pw cruise, tilt, 1995 front seats, and a whole bunch of stuff in it. Dealing on it now. It looks brand new. What's a good price? If I don't end up getting it I'll tell you where it's at if someone wants to know.

Corey, Dodge only built crew cabs until 1985. There were dealers that had cummins trucks converted in the early 90's (South Oak Dodge in Chicago Heights Il. for one used to sell them) These were made with factory parts ie. used cab, rear doors, and frame. There have been some built by private parties since then, myself for one. Ihave seen some conversions where the original frame was cut and extended and would be hesitant about this practice. Overall they offer plenty of room, are great tow rigs (with that 165"WB) and I personally think they look better than the late model rams. The problem areas are finding good rear doors and related hardware (window regulators door stops ect... )if they become damaged #ad

Murfman,
That's what I told them, but he insisted it's not custom, it was specially built for the army... I'll ask more tomorrow, like to see a sheet that says it was built for them. oh. it has 142,000 miles, got them down to $11,500
Paul... I glanced a the frame... not real close but I don't remember any cuts to lengthen it. It's 3 hours away, so I can't check it out. I'll let you know what happens.

I say buy it!!

First I would check the frame out and see what it looks like.

Check to see if it has been stretched and if the job looks decent. If the frame has been cut I would also have someone at the lot drive the truck infront of me and I would eyeball it to see if it tracks straight too.

I used to like seeing those 77 Chevy Novas doggy track down the road!! But I dont like my Dodge Trucks like that.

Give it a good once over and if you like it and are happy with the deal do it.

Keep us posted and we also want to see some pics of the rig when you get it!

That thing would bring a lot more than $11,500 around here! A local Chev dealer took a clean '93 reg cab 4x4 in on trade last week and got $15,000 out of it. It was on the lot for two days. I've been offered more than that for mine.
Sounds like a super buy if it is good and solid as mentioned above.

I would guess 12 - 14K depending on condition. Sounds like a good deal - especially for a real rare one!

Factory Crew Cab in 1991, where was I ? Hey IF the truck checks out, go for it ! Just remember to watch out for curbs #ad
. $12k is a good price, I will have more than that in mine when I get all the toys installed ! If it is a conversion, look for the old 4X2 front supension horns, they will either be there or you should be able to tell if they were cut off(I left mine on, work great for hooking a snatch strap up for pulling f**ds backwards #ad

1985 DODGE 1 ton Crew Cab(imported from California with no rust) W/8' box converted to 4X4 in 1999. Converted to a non-intercooled 1991 Cummins Turbo diesel & 5 speed Getrag in 2000(wife can't drive a stick :). Freshly rebuilt and balanced Cummins. Rebuilt Injector pump and tweaked. 4:10 gears, limited slip rear end, 205 transfer case, 16" Goodyear GSA Wranglers and LE Package and a Sony CD Stereo. Next add-on some “Banks” toys ! Wish Dodge would build a new Crew Cab in 1 ton. Last year for the Crew Cab was 1985. If you want to know why I did all of this, 2 kids, one on the way and I can't stand Ford and Chevy. You might also run the VIN through Dodge's service department data bank. That should shed some light on what it started out life as. Needless to say though, if you like it and are happy with the deal then go for it. When all's said and done, you only have to satisfy yourself.
