I have a 2001.5 model, and have been reading some folks with even newer models have found reason to replace/bypass/workaround their stock fuel filter setup. Is there any such workup in place for those of us with a 2001.5 model? I do see there is a billet aluminum cap that can be ordered, but what if someone just wants to replace the whole thing, and what about the water in fuel sensor and or heater in consideration to all this? Considering the factory unit is a plastic build. Just curious at this point, but may be something I am interested in doing at a later time. Discussions on any of these points of view are requested.

I have to ask why you would want to bypass the OEM filter/heater?

Many people blindly remove it thinking there is a benefit to its removal, but in most cases there isn’t one.

Even with added filtration there isn’t a need or benefit to removing it. Also, many of the filters found on aftermarket pumps aren’t as good as the OEM stuff. There are better options today than 10 years ago, but you do have to be selective about the filters you buy.

My 96 has a prime-loc and it makes changing the filter real easy but if you want or need to do anything to the pump it is in the way.

No, It is not my desire to indiscriminately remove the factory filter unit. However many folks have come to experience leaks in these plastic filter housings or heater elements melting and disfiguring the plastic filter housing and so forth. So to be proactive, I am looking ahead and trying to have something ready in case I find the need to change it out.

Added the Airdog on my 04 and left the OE filter inplace... no impact to performance and was a great check to see how clean it was after my filter changes... After adding the Airdog set, the OE filter was always white and clean... I probably never had to change it.
