My truck has the factory Infinity System, with CD player, Cassette, 3 band EQ, and all that. Everything works except the CD player. It works if you can get it to take the CD. But most time the CD does in 1/2 way, to the point the player is supposed to detect the CD and suck it in. Instead it just sits there and refuses to eat.

So I have been considering BOMBing the stereo. But I have so many other BOMB's I want to do right now, it would be nice to put this off till maybe christmas.

Anybody got a factory deck laying around they want to part with cheap, so I can listen to something besides FM till them? Will pay for shipping and all it price is right.

Thanks

Check out the TSB's on the infinity decks... My truck had the same problem. Something about a micro switch sticking or failing.

It's easy to fix.

I decided to pull the factory deck and install an Alpine but..... it can be fixed up cheap.

Thanks,

Found TSB 08-27-97 Rev A. Talks about replacing the deck. does not show a repair that can be made to the existing deck. Will call Dodge tomorrow. Since warranty is out, I dont hold much hope there. Still interested.

There is a flat fee for repairing the Infinity. Around $275! (I got a '99 used for 300) The '97 & '98s had a fix but they might insist on charging you the whole fee.

$275. 00! you can buy a Pioneer or Sony unit for that much that will work great with the stock speakers and have twice as many options.

SlyBones,

If you can see the microswitch through the front slot you may consider a cheap and easy fix.

Go to Radioshack and get a can of TV tuner cleaner+ lube. It won't hurt the electronics as it is non-conducting.

Spray some on the microswitch (can comes with an ext tube) and work the switch back and forth. If the switch is sticking this may help it along for less than $5.

How about fixing ERR when CD is in?

My 96 infinity system started developing skips on the last tracks of a CD. Once in a great while it would give a ERR when the CD was first put in. Now it ERR on any CD. I like SLYBONES would like to keep this thing going. I bought a CD that had a cleaner (tiny brushes) built in and some utilities. It ERRs even this CD.

With all the temp changes -30 to +70 (in a minutes time dring into a heat garage in winter) and fogging I have experienced I would like to thing the laser is dirty. Anyway to get to it and clean it.

The other thing I noticed (maybe it always did this) is the CDs would get pretty warm almost hot when playing for a while. The was worse in the winter (heater on) then the summer (AC on).

It seems that this section of the dash on the early 2nd Gens are prone to being warm.

Remove the unit from that truck and take it into the house. (lots of little fasteners-don't need to loose them in the "shed")

CAREFULLY disassemble the unit. You should be able to disassemble it to the point that you can see all kinds of stuff you normally wouldn't. Clean as instructed above or elsewhere. My point is these are easy to remove and examine. The hard part is fixing a failed component.

Local Infinity dealers wouldn't touch my first one after it quit. They cited the $275 fee and sending it out. I could reset it (sounds like the microswitch nps describes above) but it would only work once.

Extreme1,

I have taken it apart, and removed the CD player from the unit. Having had some electronic experience this was not hard or scary. However upon observation I did not see the microswitch in question. I have found, many times now, that removing the CD unit and replacing does fit the problem. Just pop it out, pop it in and your back in business. At least for a few weeks anyways. Then somewhere along the line it will stick again. I have done it enough time to be proficient at it. Only takes 10min or so for the complete removal, repair and install. Just getting very old having to do this once a month.

Called DC today. If the truck was under warranty they would replace the deck free. But too late for me. I am with EMDDIESEL, no way I will spend $275 or so fixing the stock unit. I will buy aftermarket and get much better before I do that.

To some extent, my goal with this post is to send someone beer money for something they have had laying around in the garage for the last year, and are deciding they dont need it anymore.

I would offer mine up but you prob would not be happy with it. It was getting very finicky about the CDs it would play and it would skip often. This is prob going to be your common response, those that are still working are still in the truck.

Problem is... that most of us who have Replaced the stocker... are keeping it for "Trade Time"

Now I've got more than 3 GRAND in stereo in the beast... . and I'll be dipped if it's going with the truck!

Maybe the speakers... ... MAYBE. . MAYBE NOT... it just depends on how LAZY I'm feeling when trade tiime comes.

Amps. . Subs... Heads. . Changers... they all come over to the NEW truck!!

yeah I figured as much, but doesnt hurt to ask. I plan on BOMBing the stereo sometime soon. this was my temporary fix, so I dont have to keep doing the remove/install trick I mentioned above. This is why I was trying to be cheap. I have saved for my PDR turbo and a few other goodies that get installed the end of this month. Then I start saving for a Ebrake and controller, then the stereo. Trying to get by in the mean time.

Possible source

If you have not already done so, check out eBay.com . Once at home page, do a search on "Dodge CD".

Just be careful that seller has info on units history (ie, does it not want to play when hot or cold), and of course check out seller, to be sure he is on the level, before making a bid.
