I am thinking about possibly ordering a 2009 later this year and in looking at options I was considering the factory navigation system. It seems a bit spendy, BUT the screen does appear (from photos) to be MUCH larger than the portable navigation systems.

Does the factory system require that a navigation DVD disk be installed at ALL times? If so. is that reliable, especially in dusty conditions?

What is the method for updating the database? New DVD? Cost of updates?

Does the factory Navigation system use that large screen for anything else, can I watch movies too, LOL?

Just a logical assumption, but on my 2007 Nitro I have the MyGig system which is the NAV, the sat radio and CD player in one unit. It has an on-board hard drive so it doesn't require a NAV disk all the time. I believe updates can be purchased on disk or fed into the system via USB port on the front of the unit. Again, I have no reason to think that the 08 Ram system is less advanced than my 07.

on the 08 truck's you must have the disk in at all times . as for dusty condition's so far so good with mine .

I have an 05 jeep and a 08 5500, they both have the same stereo and nav system... when I got the 08 is sent the CD out to have it copied... its a double layer or double sided disc... one of the kids in the shop knew what it was and made a copy of it for me...

I've yet to put it in the 05 Jeep to see if it will upgrade the jeeps system with the latest maps, but it works in the 08 just fine...

I bought it because it has a larger screen and sort of ties the whole thing together... and I usually keep a truck 500K miles...

We use some portable systems (Garmin) in our other trucks... move them around as we need to... personally for the long life I keep the truck... it was worth it... .

simplesmn is right, that dust might be a factor over the years... but I've found that the cover for this disc sort of snaps in and seals well... so I think it might be ok... .

Hope this helps.

If it is an REC or similar system made by Alpine the CD is always installed as on my 06. as already mentioned, dust should not be an issue as the door is always closed. In addition, I never open my windows unless I have to scream at my kids playing outside while in the truck. If its how I have the A/C on and heat when its cold. Good system is it is hooked up to my U-connect as well. Unfortunately you can not watch TV on it as it is against the law and you can not change the Nav settings once the truck is moving above 10 MPH. the is a company that can mod your head unit so you can illegally watch TV. It is a inconvenience that you can not change the Nav setting once the truck is above 10 MPH so I had this guy wrote a program for me and now you can drive 100 MPH and you can change you Nav settings. :-laf
