1. Does anybody know what the factory oil fill is on 04. 5

2. Are the K&N oil filters any good

3. What is the easiset way to get off oil filter

I believe it holds 12 Qts. THere have been documented problems with the brand oil filter you mentioned. They have had some of the glue/sealant come loose and clog up the cooling nozzles and other passages in our engines. I use Fleetguard only I get from Geno's. The easiest way is to use an oil filter wrench that fits the bottom of the fluted oil filter and come from the bottom of the motor. After you break it loose unscrew it by hand and be careful not to tilt it as it is full of oil. :D

I insist on being the first one to cuss at my truck, so I'll be doing the first oil change. On my 2001 I did the first oil change 10 weeks after breaking both of my wrists, so I'll be damned if this one is gonna escape my wrath cuz the filter might be a little bit tight

My strap type filter wrench has worked well on all four of my Dodge Cummins trucks' first oil change. And yes, factory fill is Valvoline Premium Blue.

K&N... not on my truck...

The less I have to take my truck to the dealership, the better off I feel, free change or not. One of the guys out at work had the first time free oil change on his 02 CTD done there an what a mess when he got home. Service tech forgot to screw the oil filler cap back on.

I'm waiting on my 04. 5 to come in. I will get some fleetgard oil filters in the meantime based on what I've read here but what type of oil? Stick w valvoline for the first few changes or switch to amoil? Thanks...

waiting on my 04. 5 3500 Quad Cab SRW Deep Molten Red 8' Bed...

I would use the vavoline or any other good oil till you get the engine broke in good 15000-20000 miles(shorter if you pull some weight) before you switch to a synthetic. I got 14000+ plus on my 04 and I am using the vavoline till I get 20000 on it then its Amsoil 15W40. Delco 400,Shell are easy to find at Walmart.

Valvoline Premium Blue is synthetic. So we are sure that is the factory fill? And if it is I guess I need to get that out of there quick and put in some Dino.

15,000 miles then Shell Rotella Synthetic...

allways seems to gain fuel economy.....

Oil analysis has put me to changing oil at 15,000 miles when synthetic.

don't drop it either cuz when it hits the concrete it makes an oil missle that can shoot you in the face:D

Anyone know if the 2nd gen oil filters will work on the 305/555??

Yes they will. I was told by local Cummins shop here that the only difference between the 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen oil filters are the socket fitting on the 3rd gen filter. Internally and functionally they are the same.

Just changed mine for the third time, at just over 15K. Use Dello 400.

First, with the socket type coming from the bottom, I make sure I can get it loose. Stop after about 1/2 turn. Then I slide one drain pan under the filter and punch a hole in the bottom with an awl and let it drain. I then move to the engine oil pan and let it drain into my other drain pan. Come back after about 20 minutes and both are drained and the filter isn't hot anymore. Spin the filter off with the socket, and one paper towel cleans it up. Make sure the old oil filter has its rubber gasket (had a bad experience ONCE on our van). Clean and replace the oil pan plug.

Slowly fill the new Fleetguard with new oil. As you fill it, and keep having to add more, you can see why DC says to prefill the filter - it just absorbs and absorbs and...

With just my arm I reach up and spin it on until it is snug. Then, with the socket filter wrench, approximately 3/4 turn additional... . Then the remainder of 11 quarts into the filler, run it a bit, let it sit and check . . top off as needed...

Just "my" procedure, but it is pretty clean and easy.
