Last night I took a monster buck to the front drivers side of the truck at 75 mph. Tore the bucks head clean off and demolished the antlers. While doing so, the body of the deer spun around and hit the drivers side of the truck in multiple spots. I pulled over to check the damage and found a dent in the front fender along the wheel well. A $.50 piece size of paint chipped off where it dented and there is bare metal now showing. Pretty sad knowing you've paid $50K + for a truck that the manufacturer couldn't afford to primer.

Paint and or primer is a coating. It doesn't penetrate the metal in any way. If metal is stretched, or dented, what ever is applied to it has the chance to pop off. I bet this is what happened.

Yup, I understand that part of it. It's just giving me flashbacks of when the paint fell off my '97, which also never had primer on it.

Oh that's right. I believe most car MFG's were having terrible issues with the new low VOC, environmentally auto paints...right?

Your truck has a primer coat. Paint will come off when metal is distorted..........like when YOU smash into a "monster buck"

Your 97 WAS primered. There were paint/primer problems with adhesion. More EPA mandated problems the WE get to enjoy.

If my truck has a primer coat, the primer is the exact same color as the paint. I can now easily peal the paint off the fender and the paint chips are the same color on both sides with bare metal underneath.

And according to three different body shops, my '97 did NOT have a primer coat.

my 01 didn't either, tractor threw a rock and where it knocked a ding in it , there was no primer, but it was galvanized and didn't rust either,When i hit a deer a year ago in my 07 there was primer under the paint and i could see it where the paint chipped off, Monte

Perhaps you should shop for a new body shop. This is right from the Body Service Information in TechConnect.

31 - Collision Information/Standard Procedure

BASE COAT/CLEARCOAT FINISH

The original equipment paint finish is a multi step process that involves cleaning, applying electro de-position (E-coat), anti-chip primer, basecoat, and clearcoat steps.

CAUTION:
Do not use abrasive chemicals, abrasive compounds or harsh alkaline based cleaning solvents on the painted surfaces of a vehicle. Failure to follow this caution can result in damage to vehicle finish.

On most vehicles a two-part paint application (basecoat/clearcoat) is used. Color paint that is applied to primer is called basecoat. A clear coat paint is then applied to protect the basecoat from ultraviolet light and to provide a durable high-gloss finish.

Yup, you're right, cause Charlie Hutton doesn't know anything about paint.

Well he may be the best on custom body and paint, but I believe the factory service information before I believe some guy that knows how to paint. I'm pretty sure he does not have access to the factory information.

My 97 definitely had a primer coat...that was about all that was left on it when I sold it. Paint fell off every time it rained.

I've never heard from a vehicle that was painted without a primer, maybe the Tinlizzy or some agricultural equipment but never a Car.
A primer is an absolute necessity to give a nice shine basecoat.

While I do appreciate the factory info, I've been burned by it more than once so I do not believe it just cause it came from the factory. I also do not believe that an experienced painter needs to know factory application spec literature to know if something was done or not. I brought my truck to Lanzini, Fix Auto and Maaco to get different estimates and opinions. I already knew the reputations of all three shops and that's why I chose them. All three said the same thing. Even Maaco said the truck needed to be completely stripped cause there was no primer.

Good luck with that. They will probably take the e-coat off too when they have to take it to "bare metal". There isn't a better protection you can put on a panel than an e-coat.

Good luck with what? Having it done right!? It's pretty obvious it was not done right from the start or the paint would not have fallen off 4 years after purchased new. While the paint was falling off, those spots rusted over within days. This is normal to you? You said my truck had primer and an e coat. Sounds like some top shelf high quality product.
