First, I have a 92 W250. Its got about 120k miles and I've had it for about 4k of them so I'm fairly new but I've been doing alot of reading in here. I saw some limited info about this but I wanted to know more about getting and installing a factory tach in my truck.

It doesn't have a tach now and I'd really rather not have a big one mounted somewhere. I'm gonna get some Pillar pod gauges but I'd really like a nice big factory tach where its supposed to be. Not sure if I can get one first off and if so do I have to get the entire gauge cluster? I'm assuming I will and I won't need to worry about where the fuel gauge will go but if I don't will I need to put in another fuel gauge? And is any of this possible at all. Does anyone know if this is something I'll be able to order or will I have to find a donor truck?

Also in related business my speedo shows about half the actual speed that I'm going. I was told that the speed sensor was checked along with some other stuff but I haven't done any checking on my part though and was just wondering if anyone might have a good place to start my search. Also the odometer gets stuck from time to time and just stops spinning. Desperately want to get this fixed so I can keep track of milage and maintenance.

Thanks

Welcome Steve. The factory tach was a 2. 5 inch standalone that mounted on the dash. To the best of my knowledge there never was a tach that integrated into the instrument cluster. The A-pillar pods seem to work well but by the time you get three on there the top one is a little tough to see. If you just want a tach the single pod will do but would reccomend you invest in boost and pyro if you don't have them. There are several manufacturers that make a three gauge pod to mount to the top of the dash. There are really for 2nd gen trucks but with a little work can be modified for 1st gen. Your choice for location. With the 92 you should already have the harness to tap into so hooking the tach up should be fairly easy.

The speedo not working right is possibly the adapter between the speed sensor and the gear. They have a habit of getting out of line or chewing the gears up in them. The sensor is the elctronic part but there is still a mechanical piece in there to spin the sensor. Possibly somebody here has pictures of the problem area. Good luck.

I got my 3 gauge pod from PDR, and it's the one for the 1st gen model. 2 piece model, base plus cover, and it extends down over the hump in the dash. Did have to wait about 3 months though, because they are getting harder then hens teeth to find. Picked mine up back in April. Check with them, they may still have a line on more.

I have the factory tach, mounted in pod. Was on the dash just to the right of the hump. Moved it to just left of and above the message center ahead of mounting 3 gauge pod. Will post some pics when I have time.

Thanks for the info.

I was actually planning on a dual A pillar pod for EGT and Boost from Autometer. I'll definately check into the one from PDR if they can find any more.

So I guess my quest now is to find a way to put in a tach that looks good. Any pictures would be great of how other people have done it or even how the factory looks .

Also does anyone happen to know if there is anything different about a gas engine tach compared to a deisel tach other than red line? I have a nice tach out of a gas chevy that I could use possibly if it would work.

And I just gotta say I love my dodge:D

I bought my three guage dash mount and adapter as noted above from gale banks, probably same parts. didn't have to wait. you might try them, just make sure they know it's 1st gen mount adapter.

Steve,

I also have a 92 W250 and my truck came with the factory tach. Click under my name and in my album you will find a picture showing the gauge set-up that I have in my truck.

Thanks a ton. Lots of usefull information. Now I just have to pick which way to go.

Thanks for the pics they were very helpfull. I'll have to get some pictures of my truck up here sometime soon but she's not real pretty.

thanks again

Steve, most gasser tachs pick up pulses off the distribueter and diesels off the cranshaft, drive shaft , or some mechanical rotation. But it will depend on how your tach picks up that info hope this helps .
