Factory visit

I will be making a trip to Indiana in about two weeks, while I'm there I am going to visit the Cummins Plant/main offices in Columbus. Anything you guys need me to pick up? Get a list of questions together because I hope to take a tour. Should be interesting.

No questions but the last time I talked to a buddy who 'spec'd out" trucks for Cummins he said the plant was in a "dry county"... bring your own I guess... .

Enjoy the tour. Never visited that plant, but I did have the opportunity to tour the marine engine facility in Charleston, SC a few years ago. I was very impressed, and I've been thru many, many automotive and other mfg plants for my job over the years...

Very clean, people seemed very knowledgable about their jobs.

I toured the B series assembly plant in Columbus when I was back for the Muncie event this year. I didn't think you could cram that many diesel engines into one location..... then I got to Muncie It was a great tour and I highly recommend it.

I used to haul engines out of there everyday for a year to Chicago, but didnt really get the 'tour', just shipping department and to and from the cafeteria. Say hello to Rob and crew in shipping for me.

No. They didn't have a tour schedule set up. I had to call in advance and set it up then they pulled a veteran worker off the floor to guide the tour. I like the way they did it and you got a tour from a person who knows the job and seemed to really enjoy it. Sorry I don't have the phone number anymore

He said a the end of the tour we could have whatever we could carrie out while we were standing by the shipping docks. Believe me, if I couldda gotten one of those 1k pound suckers on my back I wouldda packed it outta there.

Heck I wish that was true when I was there, they had a 40 yard roll off dumpster in dock one and it was full of old 12cm exhaust housings from the old 12 valves. Seen pistons, cranks and other 'scrap' goodies that I couldnt take home since it was going to scrap. Five days a week for a year I was there, the only thing I got to have was a block heater cord from an 03 HO, that I've since traded for TDR issue 38 that I lost. Great people there.

Engin-mounted air compressor

I gots a question if ya can relay it to the factory dudes: In the early 90's, on the fleet vehicles with 6BT's, did Cummins produce an engine-mounted air compressor, that bolts up from behind the case cover somewhere in the vicinity of the power steering/vacuum pump location on our engines? AND, if they did, can the power steering and vacuum pump be bolted to the back of that air compressor?



I went to a Kenworth repair delearship a couple days ago and they printed a schymatic of a compressor that apparantly bolted up right where the pwr steering pump goes, but though it looks like the schymatic is displaying for an early 90's 6BT they couldn't tell me for sure.



I -think- the compressor would be found on Ford 650's and 750's, I guess in wreckers and moving vans???

Can anybody shed some light on what make and model a '93 6BT with a factory air brakes would be found in???



Thanks dude - if this works out to all be 'yes', then we have all found a simple, bolt-in way to have onboard air!

Actaully they CURRENTLY make an engine mounted air compressor for these engines. I'ts a little diffrent from what you're talking about but it's on the engines (ISB-02's) used by Ford, Freightliner, Monaco, etc. On the new ones they have a diffrent piece on the back of the engine (like a bellhousing but bolts flat on the back of the engine) that the compressor is mounted in as well as the high pressure injection pump (CP3). I believe they used to have a compressor in place of your power steering, vac pump but in those applications they didn't use a vac pump.

I'll be sure to ask I hope that I will be able to get a tour, even though I have someone working on it for me. But if I see 12cm exhaust housings laying around I'll grab them. I'll be sure to take a extra big back pack with me, you know for my camera and stuff??? Hey Sam I'll be coming home through Durango, I hope, so maybe I'll see you in CO. I live in Az. by the way.
