Was getting warm air out the vents so had AC looked at by dealer, found failing expansion valve and seals, replaced. Drove it a few days, same problem. Blows cold first thing AM today but a couple days ago on an 85 degree day pass side was blowing 65 degrees and drivers side 70+ degrees. Not adequate. Took it back in and was told now the mechanic thinks the condenser is plugged and that was messing up the expansion valve, so if we replace that it should work. They are very unsure of why it would be plugged or contaminated internally, some question if something could have happened during engine replacement a couple years ago. Is this a very rare problem? I know nothing about A/C systems.
 
If the A/C was opened when they did engine replacement, system should have been flushed, new expansion valve and dryer should have been installed. This is a common problem that happens when systems are opened. Moisture is allowed into and cause many issues. I'd be concerned about the compressor also. Maybe take to a good A/C shop unless under warranty. Good luck.
 
The dryer material can come apart and debris bomb the system. Compressor failure same thing. Internal corrosion from being left open and moisture getting in is possible. The most common cause of debris in a system is compressor failure.

Expansion valves will fail from debris.

How old is your fan clutch and how long does it take when the A/C is working properly to hear the engine fan? The heat being removed from the cab has to go somewhere.

The condenser is a "filter" not by intention, but, by it's design. So any debris in the system can plug it up and they can't be effectively flushed of debris anymore.

X2 on good A/C shop.

Plugged condenser, if correct, IMO is replace compressor, dryer, expansion device and flush system. Also replace both high and low side service valves as age/heat/debris has em leak often. You can find the OEM compressor brand Denso/Sanden/etc cheaper than from the dealer and IMO they are worth it vs. cheap knock-offs every parts store offers.
 
Would the new engine have a new fan clutch and new compressor or would those parts come off the old engine and go on the new one? 2014 truck so it could be 8 years old. Not sure exactly what parts are included on the crate motor they installed but it was Cummins rebuild through dealer. Everything else has worked perfectly for a little over a year, other than this AC failure.

When you guys say to find a specialty shop for A/C I can't find any around here (East side of King County, WA). All the google searches just return shops that do everything including AC. Dealer seems better than that I guess, and this dealer works on tons of RAM trucks (Monroe, WA).
 
It does not look like the AC system is part of the new engine so I guess it's all original from 2014. I wonder if compressor and dryer can be inspected to see if the debris that made the expansion valve fail came from either of those components. Mighty not be terribly expensive to replace all those parts at the same time since the system will be apart? How labor intensive is this system. I have worked on a lot of small engines but never took apart an engine with air conditioning much less a diesel engine.
 
“Parts cannon” needs to know if corrosion is a factor. The evaporator will need to be replaced if so. Otherwise the evaporator can be flushed. It’s pulling the dash to replace…

If you are paying for a condenser then I would replace the compressor and do the dryer again. Flush system of course.

I would replace the fan clutch as well as they get slow to lock in as they age. Good enough for the engine but the A/C system suffers as it waits for the old clutch to lock in.
