My buddy has a 2006 with 60K miles (bought new) and his AC clutch coil is open. Seems like an odd failure for a low mileage truck that doesn't get heavy use of the AC.
He has also been experiencing and burning rubber smell that he couldn't locate. Not sure yet if it's related to the coil failure.
He's a mechanic and plans on just replacing the clutch assembly or if he can get it, just the coil.

Is an open coil a sign of something else going on?

Thanks!

Scott

I personally would replace the complete compressor. It’s 13 years old. I have had several in the 06 or 07 range that locked up the compressor itself or the clutch bearings. All with higher miles on them though.

So far it's looking like that's his only answer. The dealer only has the entire assembly - $630.
But there are cheaper options out there.

My compressor locked up on my 06 with only 70k on it. I haven't had any issues with the Four Seasons replacement but it's only been 30k since then. Point being I don't think early failure is all that rare but it took me by surprise too.

I changed the clutch / coil on mine when it failed. Next time I'll probably need the entire assembly.

Don't forget, the TIPM will have to be reset if the coil failure tripped it out.

It looks like he lucked out. Since it was an open rather than a short, there still seems to be a 12V signal going to the clutch.

The 06-07’s failed at a higher rate than other years. The factory remains were sketch for a while too but have since been improved
