So both rear wheel bearing seals failing (2014 3500 longbed,HO/Aisin) at 75,000 miles. Will be covered under Max-care warranty. But maybe failing due to slight slop in the wheel bearings? I feel like at this mileage I should replace bearings too, not just seals, even if bearings "look OK". Already replaced a failed FRONT wheel bearing. Are factory bearings cheap Chinese crap? Thoughts?

bearings are likely timken ,just a guess as other bearings in the axle are timken. ill choose skf or nsk where ever possible but thats just me. hard to say why the seals leaked but it doesnt seem like a common problem that im aware of. fix it and move on with life. im sure who ever does the job will replace bearings and all

Hope so! Service writer at dealer just said seals but not really amy extra time to change out bearings when it's apart so if they won't warranty I will just pay for bearings.

Bearing excessive play is possible, from factory they are set on the loose side.
Exchange them because of this, i don't think so. They last almost forever because they run in gear oil.
China, maybe, but built to Chryslers spec, not everything from china is just crap.

comrade ozy - i will do my best for the rest of my life to NOT buy anything chinese. given what their government did to the world economy regarding the china flu. no offense intended. cheers, chris

Thats true, Timken either owns or closely monitors manufacturing plants in other countries. Not ALL Chinese stuff is crap! But enough of it is crap to deserve their reputation. And I am sure there is some American made crap as well. But in general I prefer American made products. Of course we deserve cheap crap if we all run out to buy the stuff because, for example, well made tools are "too expensive".

Referring to COVID as china flu is offensive to Chinese Americans. refer to it as CCP (Chinese Communist Party) Virus or Covid.

I'm fine with that, i try the same.
My point is that not everything from China is crap, thats all.

By the way I've bought crap produced in all kinds of countrys... even Germany.

germany makes some good stuff. arguably the best torq wrenches money can buy. their bearings are top notch also. milwaukee fuel is decent gun from china. but all the elec impacts are from china so you have choice. ill avoid anything from china unless theres no other option. their hand tools, garbage. drill press ,garbage. bolts and nuts, garbage

I had this issue with my driver side at 50k miles. A buddy and I just did that one side and the seals, didn't change out the bearings or anything other than the axle fluid and new axle seal. Truck just roller 199k this morning on the way to work and no issues with either side since. I was told this is a common issue with these trucks but not sure how many other people have had this problem.

Hey,

Don't discount the crap made in the USA! Not defending the Communist Red Chinese at all, but I've endured plenty of crap manufactured substandard in the USA. It ALL amounts to having PROPER design specs, enforcing and proper QUALITY CONTROL on the manufacturing processes.

Anyhoo, I think USA has overcome a lot of the poor manufacturing reputation we had. And with all that, I do attempt to buy American where possible.

Cheers, Ron

(Yes, that was sarcasm - but seriously, knock off the politics in the non-politics sections of the site :) )

Sorry, I really didn't think of it as political... I was making point more in terms of quality manufacturing is relative to standards and not location. I think this is the first time in 20 years as a member, I've been warned.

Warning noted and accepted.

I was told .

who told you it was a common problem? most people these days scurry onto forums with every little thing that goes wrong but i havent seen many leaking rear seal threads. last one i recall was several months ago and it was on the ford site. i call bs on your source that said it was common.

Check the breather on the rear end. My 99 and 03 needed seals around 75,000 miles.
Just a mess cleaning the drum brakes at the time.

Back in angelic form,

I don't think it's a given bearings need replacement just because seals leaked, unless axle was run low or out of fluid. But I would inspect and assess, which I would hope any mechanic worth his salt would do. BTW, do you have any noise from your rear end... c'mon, I'm being good, it's an innocent and valid question.

Cheers, Ron
