Just diagnosed a busted vacuum pump in my dealer installed E-Brake. Of course I passed the 3 year mark last June. I found one at Newmoparparts.com for $569. Any better ideas? In trying to remove the "fan" belt I ran into a snag in that it will not pass the tensioner. It released from all other accessories but is caught between the tensioner and the tensioner mount. Any hints on how to release it completely?

Thanks Ken

Ken,

Sorry to hear about your E-Brake. I tried to change my serpentine belt myself awhile back. I got as far a you have and decided to put it back on and let the dealer do it. When the dealer changed the belt they put several small cut in it trying to force it behind the tensioner. I had them put another new belt on after noticing the cuts. The second time they did it they actually removed the tensioner so it would fit. I have read different threads where guys have replaced the belt by wedging it in place but I wouldn't want to damage the belt and have it fail prematurely; I guess that is the aircraft mechanic in me. Also I tore my arms up trying to change that darn thing.

Ken use the part number above and go get one from cummins. Last month I had to replace mine, bill was 119. 00 and that included shipping it 500 miles in about 14 hours cause I was out of town. 569. is down right theft

I replaced my vacuum pump a year ago. $83. 00 from Cummins. Dealer wanted $700. 00. What a joke. Also, about the belt. I can replace mine in about 5 minutes without taking anything off. The key is flipping the belt on its side and sliding it out between the bottom pulley and the tensioner. Its very easy to do and the only tool required is a 1/2 breaker bar or ractchet to release the tension. I know this is hard to describe in an email. A better discription may be found if you do a search.

Khorn, Sorry to hear about the bad luck! My rig hit 50k on the way home yesterday and I am wondering if I should change my belt? It looks ok so far. I don't like taking chances.

I carry a spare pump and belt lost a pump at 83k been good since (197K now) I leave my jake on towing or not they are cheep enough to carry a spare I got mine from cummins NW Randy

My pump failed too, 89k miles. I have an extended warranty and the dealer has the replacement pump listed at over $1000. 00:eek: I told the service manager that you can get the same part from Cummins for about $100. No response, imagine that.
