Fan blade and clutch fan removal, I NEED HELP FAST

I need to know how to remove the clutch fan assembly from the pulley assembly. Does the huge nut have to be threaded off of the pulley assembly? I got the bolts off behind the fan that hold the pulley on, but something is still holding the clutch fan to the pulley assembly or water pump (whichever it is that it's attached to. I need help fast because I have it tore down right now. I have never seen a fan come off in this manner. Thanks Tim

The big nut needs to come off. Its a LEFT hand thread. Get a long drift and give the nut a couple of hits to loosen it. It might be real tight. Also might need to hold the pulley from turning.

Any ideas on how to keep the pulley from turning, i've tryed almost everything to hold the pulley and almost have it boogered up.

When a bunch of Seattle area guys got together to do the dowel pin fix, we used a very large pair of Channellock pliers and it worked great.



They factory manual calls for wedging a screwdriver between the bolt heads on the front of the pulley, but I couldn't see how that would work.

or run the 10mm screws back into the pulley and use a screwdriver wedged between 2.

You must have really worked at removing the 10 mm bolts before removing the fan !!! Now you have to put them back in in order to have a solid surface when striking the large nut with a drift. After removing many fans I don't even attempt to do it without striking the nut first, it's just a waste of time any other way without buggering up the pulley.

Does anyone know if the large nut behind the fan is standard or metric? Does anyone know what size it is? I'm going tomorrow to buy a wrench to fit it instead of using a crescent wrench. I really appreciate everyone's help. Thanks Tim

I use a 1-1/2" open end just because I have one, the nut actually is 1-7/16"

the infamous fan nut is 36mm or 1 7/16" Wedge a large screwdriver between the pulley bolts and give the wrench a sharp rap... . remember it is a LEFT HAND thread.

I used a Craftsman strap wrench to hold the pully and it worked very well. As was mentioned earlier in the thread, hit the nut very firmly with a large drift and hammer several times, (toward the right edge of the nut, at the corner) and then take it right off. Since it is a left hand thread, it will come off, clockwise as you're looking at it from the front. Have fun!

I ended up buying a 1 7/16 wrench but still couldn't get it loose. Used a drift punch and a BIG hammer - it worked!!

Also re-installed it using the same method.

Not sure what I'll do with the 1 7/16 wrench. Takes up a lot of room in a toolbox.

Use a 3/8" breaker bar etc. to put a lot more tension on the tensioner pulley. Then rap on the wrench you put on the hex nut to loosen it.

I got the fan assembly off the next day after i rented a special tool from auto zone that did not work. My whole problem getting this darn thing off was that i could not hold the pulley from turning while i was trying to break the 1-7/16 nut loose, and i had no help! However it was my own ingenuity that finally got it off, not the tool i rented cause it still took 2 people to use the tool! I had purchased a new belt at the same time so i cut the old belt in half and wrapped it around the pulley and clamped a pair of vice grips on the end of the belt and then turned the nut until it the belt tightened down on the pulley and then i struck the wrench a time or two and it broke loose easily.
