How can I tell if my fan clutch is good or bad. My temperature guage is the kind with only slashes or marks. This is Arizona and about 105 degrees out now. the guage reads just on the first slash mark after warm up. The transmission guage I Installed reads 155 to 160 degrees when the engine is warmed up,Does this sound normal. I thought the transmission should run at about 140 degrees most of the time on flat land and not towing.

Don't know about the transmission temp as that is the next thing I want to get but the engine temp is where mine runs at all the time. When towing in the hills, the gauge will climb up to the 3/4 mark, depends on how much boost I feed it and how long the hill is. Just got back from a 2600 mile trip with the travel trailer up to northern Washington.

When the fan kicks on, you can hear it! Kinda sounds like a big turbo starting to spool up as it starts moving the air. Mine doesn't come on much when empty but when towing it will turn on once in a while on flat ground and then when in the hills.

Do you have a transmission cooler under the bed on the drivers side or only the one in front of the radiator?

During the Florida summers (90's) my trans temp will be about 140 under normal highway driving. Stop and go driving it will quickly approach 170. The under the bed cooler will come on at 180, mine rarely comes on, but I'm not towing anything with my truck.

When the fan bearing went south on my 89, I replaced the mechanical fan with two electric Perma-Cool 14" fans. When the AC is on, my temp NEVER rises above first hash mark. My transmission temp stays at about 120 degrees and my oil pressure stays at the third hash mark. I'll probably convert the Vette to PermaCool fans also. :D :D :D
