Here I am

Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) fan clutch, I assume it shouldn't be locked solid...

This is obviously a dumb question, but I assume even a "severe duty" fan clutch wouldn't be locked solid, would it? With the engine luke warm, I can rotate the engine/slip the belt by pulling on the fan. I guess this explains why the only thing I hear at 80 mph in the truck is the fan being cleared for take off. Should I bother replacing it? I'm sure it affects mileage and power some, but I can't really see it causing any problems if I keep my eye on it. $100 bucks that I don't want to drop right now... .

Thanks,

Mike

Hi, Welcome,

your right, it should not be locked up like that. I am sure it will affect mileage and power. one thing to consider, it is probably hard on the bearing assembly, and once, i saw one that came unglued at highway speed... . took out the radiator, intercooler and the hood in one blow. i don't know it it was locked up or what the actual cause of failure was, but it was an expensive repair. besides all that, i don't think i could stand something taking away power, when i am trying everyday to add some :)

Just take it off for the winter. If you live somewhere relatively cold, you`ll have no problems at all. Only thing that suffers in mild to mid weather is the AC. (I wouldnt leave it off for summer, but I do a lot of traffic driving) I bet you`re losing horsepower due to the fan being locked all the time. And like DB said, the fan breaking is always a possiblity, and a baaad one at that.

the KDP jig kit has a nice set of wrenches that take off the fan nut in a snap. . otherwise, theyre a PITA to take off. . (reverse thread also)

good luck
