Sometimes, within a couple seconds after startup, I get one "kaa-ching" (don't quote me) sort of noise from the engine compartment. Today, it was really loud, it even got my neighbor's attention. Is this possibly from the fan clutch or maybe the ac compressor acting up? I havent seen any cats or raccoons being ejected from the front of my p/u. I have a 2004. 5 5. 9 4wd quad cab shortbed, 42,000 miles.

Probably the A/C compressor kicking on, seems they all do it. My roommate just commented on mine today... I said "It's a FEATURE" :)

There have been many complaints on this "noise" and it's what people call normal. I thought it was only when the AC was turned on, but it'll do it without intermittently. I believe it is the AC compressor which the pulley turns even when it's off. Seems centrifugal to me upon start-up. I was alarmed at first, but now it's a standard feature I've come to except... but mine's more of a Kaa-chow!

My A/C does that. I've never heard/felt it with the A/C and defrost turned off. Most of the time when it kicks at idle it will shake the truck. It's been doing it all along so I doubt it's a sign of bad things to come.

knocks on lots and lots of wood

There was a flash for it on a couple of years. Don't recall which ones without doing some research. If your dealer is replacing the fan clutch for the noise he's wasting your time and DC's money. And it has no effect if you leave it alone. All three of my trucks did it.
