OK, I had my fan clutch assembly off a couple of months ago whenI did the KDP fix. Have been having problems with overheating issues and think it is the fan clutch not engaging. I got a new one to put on but have worked on this thing for about 4 hours now and cannot get the old one off. Yes, I know it is left hand threads but it won't break loose. I will try the air chisel method tonight, does anyone have a better way to hold the pully so it won't turn? Tried strap wrenches, wouldn't grip tight enough. Tried locking the belt on the alt. pully, that didn't work either. The book says to insert a screwdriver or bar into the pully bolts to lock it but I can't find anything small enough to do that and still have enough strength to hold it. (plus leave me enough room to get a wrench on the removal nut. )

Want to leave in the morning heading for Piers and will be pulling a flat bed trailer with some stuff on it up to my son in Washington. The weather will be hot and I need to get this fixed!!

HELP!

I whacked the @#$% out of it with a long punch and a BFH. Never thought of using an air chisel, although my air chisel is pretty gutless. You could also take the whole assembly off and then put the pulley in a vise. There is 4 bolts that hold the assembly to the block. One of them is kind of a pain to get back in, but it's better than struggling with it for hours on end.

I bought the fan clutch removal tool kit from Napa, can't remember price though, has a nice pulley bolt holder and two or three flat fan clutch wrenches. The holder grabs hold of two bolts on fan pulley, flat 36mm wrench grabs hold of the nut, handle end of wrench has a 1/2"drive hole for a ratchet to aid in loosening the nut. Put some antiseize on the nut once finished. Hope you didn't waste your time and money on an aftermarket clutch, only MOPAR.

I had to get the tools from Napa as well to get the fan off my '92. I tried the punch and hammer method, but mine was on there really tight.

Vice Grips are your FRIEND

IF used properly. Clamp them to the pulley, though not across the width of the pulley. Do it with a 5" pair if you got 'em, and put it on the backside of the pulley, and let it catch on the front cover as you turn the fan clutch nut. If you cant get the V-G in there, taek the whole assembly out and put the cast iron end of the ass'y in a vice, and use the Vice Grips. You can smooth out any roughness or booger-ups with a triangle file. I have the extra pulley for a V-belt on mine, so I just clamped them onto to it to pull the fan clutch off. Cant remember why I did, though... ... I still have the one that came with it.

Good luck.

Stan,

I soaked the back side of the nut with some Kroil and let it sit for 30 min. , then tapped the nut with a punch and it came right off.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I did the air chisel thing and it worked great. Chewed the nut up a little due to me letting it slip. Now gotta get back out there and get the new one put on.

Man, I gotta either buy or make a spanner wrench to hold the pully. Sure will save a lot of time and frustration the next time I need to remove the fan.

Now all you guys using the chisel or 'other' method of removing the clutch, what are you using to hold the pulley in place to tighten the nut? Yeah I know about it tightening itself up from the fan turning when engine is running, but I'd like to get a few turns on it before I let it go that route...

I was able to get a few good hammer blows on mine last night. That was the way I put it on last time and it sure didn't come off easy this time! Not much of a way to torque it to the 42ft/pds the book says it is supposed to be.

Man, I gotta get a wrench to hold this thing. Anyone know if the member that was making the wrench and holder set is still making them? I saw something in the archive about it.

Stan

There is nothing special about the wrench for the nut. It is one of the standard "fan nut wrenches" that my son has in his shop tool box.

I sent you a pm about the holder, but I'll say it here also... . I have a drawing of one..... a fellow CTDer here modeled it in CAD whne he had one of the 2nd gen KDP kits.

If there is interest of anyone making their own, I can get a .pdf file of the drawing and have it available.

I also have a . dxf version for those who have the ability to use it.

Please don't pm me... . rather use:

Jay, Sorry for not getting back faster. I'm on a road trip to Piers for the get together. YES -I would love to have that drawing! Thanks a lot for offering it up.

Fan Nut removal

I used a 1-7/16" open end wrench and a large hammer. Don't have to hold the thing from turning cause I put the whammy to her. Popped loose easy enough.
