My friend has a 99 CTD SO 4x4 with 47re. He overheats (235) when pulling 10K up 2% grade. Since he didn't hear his fan kick in he had his fan clutch replaced and it still does the same thing, no fan noise and it gets hot. ( Note: the outside air temp is 100. ) He went several places for and aftermarket clutch and they said it was a dealer item until he went to PEP Boys. He is taking it back to have them install another one. Should he really get a dealer one?? If his fan came on and it still got hot I would start looking somewhere else. Driving empty the temp goes back and forth between 180 and 190.

If your freind still has the breather blow-by bottle in place, check between the radiator and the charge air cooler for build-up on the radiator. What can and does happen, the fan will suck up the oily residue from the bottle, throw it into the radiator and then road dirt/debris clings to it creating a packed mess.

The only real good way to clean this out is to remove the radiator, and powerwash it, carefull not to damage it in the process. Then remove the bottle, get a 3/4" hose barb and 4' or so of 3/4" hose and extend the tube back near the transmission, fasten accordingly.

Also, if the temp needle is moving between 180 and 190,, try a 180* t-stat, this made mine stay a constant 180*, no more bouncing needle.

Good luck, Rob
