What happens when the fan clutch does not lock up when the engine starts getting warm?????

And where is the best place to get a replacement??? And the approx cost?????

Rick

$62!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure wish there was an O'reilly's in Monticello, Utah a few weeks ago. NAPA was about $135, but... ... ... ... hadda have it.

Rick,

As I recall it sounds like engine is revving real high. Not roaring as in fan engaged.

Test when engine is cool and off spin fan with your hand there should be a little resistance also you can grab a fan blade or two and try to move fan back and forth ( towards front on truck than back toward engine). If the fan moves back and forth it is bad.

As long as the engine dosen't over heat your fine.

When running empty its not a problem. . the problem comes when I have the 5er in tow and pulling the hills. I watch it close but on a couple of hills. . I have seen 200*. I have some towing scheduled this summer here in Ca. where I have seen 108-110* so I think I will replace it...

Time for a Horton. Compare the cost to your local stealer OEM replacement and you can justify the $ a bit easier.

Pulling 5er

RHARVEY,

That is exactly the problem I had. Didn't have a clue the clutch was bad until I hooked up the 5er and departed Ogden. Even after failure it had enough internal friction to cool the engine at idle. I didn't hear any roar after my temp gauge had passed mid-point (halfway up a hill doing 60) so I knew immediately that the clutch was bad. No leakage or any other hint.

You can turn the Horton on/off manually when you want plus it freewheels better than stock when not needed. Price is prohibitive for me at $700-800.

The last I priced a Horton it was $600 for a new fan, clutch, and wiring. Automatic on with A/C, too. Horton is used extensively on the big rigs.

Another thought

US Gear reportedly is coming out with a new fan clutch for the Cummins. I read it is similar to the cyclone fan they sell for POS excuse me Power-Stroke applications.

the reason I found out mine was bad is that at idle the fan is not turning fast enough to keep the condensor cool for the A/C and air will start blowing hot in the cab until you get moving fast enough to get some air moving over the condensor, at idle without the fan clutch keeping the condensor cool the high pressure side can go extremely high, high enough to pop the high side pressure valve, or possibly a hose. Replaced mine once with a cheap one and within 6 months it was bad.

Horton

Good morning,

Regarding the Horton I think it is all a matter of need. On my 96 3500 the Horton was the second option I put on the truck. The first was a Prime-Loc. I tow a large fifth wheel and I also have a large Lance. After towing several times bone stock I balanced the cost of the Horton against the value of the truck and the extended length of time I plan to keep it. Then I made the jump and am not sorry one bit that I did so. I have never had to worry about overheating the engine if I am distracted, in heavy traffic, or otherwise do not look at the temp. at the just the right moment to see it getting high. The manual switch lets me turn the fan on for what ever reason I may want to even if the temp. is not up, heavy, slow traffic or city traffic for instance. Yes it is expensive and I will not save the cost of the fan vs drag re fuel savings over the life of the truck. But I did it anyway and would probably do so again.

Hi

Hi Matt, Good to hear from you. I have been out of circulation for a while due to surgery but am out of the hospital now. Between two and three months for recovery.

The way to test your fan clutch is to unhook the spring tab on the front. Now try to rotate the pin in the center that the spring is still attached to. It should rotate about 45? degrees counter clockwise. Mine was tight and didn't turn. Pegged the temp needle in Custer State park on the Needles highway pulling a small heavy trailer.

LOL!:D Hey CC, I was curious how the elk made out after tangling it up with a Cummins. :-laf :-laf :-laf

I checked the play in the fan last night and found there is some slack from side to side. As much as I wanted the Horton. . I went a head and ordered the OEM clutch from Advantage Dodge. . It should be sitting on the door step when I get home from work tomorrow. I know now how to remove the nut that holds the fan so that wont be a big deal.
