I had a redneck look at my pickup the other day, and he had me pop the hood first thing :). He wiggled the fan (I guess to check the water pump?) and it moved!!!!! I need a new bearing to go on the fan hub. Data tag on my engine is long gone, and none of the parts stores here carry the bearing. They all have the clutch, and a few SAY the bearing is part of it.....

I seem to remember seeing in a magazine article a while back that this isnt an uncommon problem. Most of my magazines are at Mom's, so I cant look it up. DOes anyone know the part number? I'm at the shop on a dial up connection, so a search isnt too great an idea at the time. Thanks for your help.

Daniel

PS- Guy didnt even drive the truck, and tried to talk me down $800. Bragged about a D-max pulling a load of cattle 50-55mph up some hills around here. I said yeah, I'd hope it could do that.

The Cummins # is 3910736 for the pre-inter cooler pickups & # 3910739 for the inter cooled pickups; the numbers are for the bearing alone.

Here is a link for a P/N, I think it is for an inter cooled pickup based on the guys sig.

PS if you are using dial-up click on the link at the top of the page, it will give you a stripped down version for slow connections.

PSS if you can get the # off the bearing (may need to remove the bearing from the housing) a good bearing supply should be able to cross it to a new one. Also the bearing is available from Dodge.

Alan is the man when it comes to Cummins Quickserve and the 'search' feature:D. Hey Alan, got room for another engine serial number on your account you can run for me? I'd like to know any workup/background history on a ReCon engine in my donor. Thanks, sorry dp for the hijack.

Your too kind. I firmly believe in "Pay it forward". Over the years many have help me; in/out of the TDR, just trying to keep the books balanced.

Alan- Muchas Gracias, I think. I checked with Cummins, $113. 50!!! So, does anyone have an assembly, less fan and clutch, from one of the dozen or so blown engines across the country? Of course, I wont give $120 for it, but I could make iot fair to ya.

THanks again, guys.

How is this fan hub bearing affecting your everyday use of the truck? Is the truck whining, squealing at the fan, not cooling properly, fan hub coming off into the radiator? Which yeah I guess could be bad. . Whats the consequences of running with a bad fan hub bearing?

One note of caution - - - for the fan clutch, Cummins was unable to supply a fan clutch part number for my engine number. (During the late 1990 / early 1991 time frame the fan and fan clutch were supplied by Chrysler - your local Dodge dealer will still have the fan clutch. ) The actual bearing where the fan pulley hub runs on may be a Cummins part. If someone could reach in and wiggle the fan, then the fan clutch is probably the problem. Note that the fan clutch is a left hand thread and the nut will require a very large wrench :)

Good luck!

RW, I was kinda thinking that way too. But figured that redneck knew what he was talking about :-laf . I wouldn't worry about Daniel.
