Can anyone provide me with the size of the fan hub nut on my 97? Once I get the front end back together, I gotta do a front crank seal. Currently the truck is 130 miles away from me, and I need to make sure I have a wrench that fits the nut.

Anyone? Thanks a bunch

-Will

I can measure when I get home but you'll need a thin wrench as well as a way to hold the hub from spinning. The KDP jig kits come with the wrenches, one of which holds the heads of the small bolts holding the fan to the hub.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe it is 32mm. If you can find a Ford Clutch fan wrench kit at your local parts house (Dodge Cummins is listed on the back) - that is what you need. Advance and O'Rielly's have them in stock.

The size is 1-7/16" but a 1-1/2" will work fine. Most cheap Chinese wrenches will fit in fine. The real trick to getting the fan off is to place a punch or drift on the right side of flat and give it a good whack with a hand sledge. You can also skip the wench entirely and use an air chisel with a blunt tip on the right side of the nut flat.

36mm or 1 7/16". I found a cheap 1 3/8 wrench at Wally World and ground it to fit.

I also made a spanner to fit over the heads of the bolts that hold the pully on the fan. It has a long handle for leverage.

I don't like the idea of water pump pliers.

will,

harold, tdr member hbowers manufactures wrenches for this. he sends em with the kdp jig or tab kits he makes but will sell em at a very affordable price to whoever wants a set seperately

you could always just use a 10mm on the bolts that hold the fan unit to the block. there is one bolt behind the pully but with a thin wrench you can get at it no problem. then pull the shroud and the fan out together. i just did this on the weekend while doing my kdp, saves the fught with holding the fan and cracking the big LEFT HANDED nut.

I did the same thing on my 97 when I did the KDP. ;) Didn't seem hard at all and avoided all the bad language :-{} trying it the other way. Your choice... both ways work. :D

A big Stanley Monkey Wrench took the nut off the first time. How bad was the seal leaking? I could have swore I put it in right the first time. It was a pain in the *** to do though. Gotta make real sure the seal is flush when installing.
