Hey guys,

I’m in the middle of tabbing my dowel pin, and ran into a giant snag. I cannot for the life of me get that dang fan nut off. If you are looking at the engine, do you loosen the nut by turning it clockwise or counterclockwise? I'm in the process of making my own spanner wrench to help take it off. I don't have a 36mm wrench, but am using an adjustable wrench. I need some suggestions on how to get that darn thing off. Thanks

Brandon

Clockwise (as if you were screwing it ON)

I used a steel bar about a foot long or more and and a big hammer to hit the drivers side of the nut. A few good licks and it was loose enough to remove with channelocks.

I use a air chisel with a DULL bit to turn it like screwing it on would be, that removes it. Hit it for 2 seconds with the air chisel and it spins off by hand.

Knowing there's only about 300 ways to remove the danged thang, I used a chain wrench and an adjustable.

It took a bit of... ..... uh, spirit to break it, but once broken came right off.

Ok guys,

It’s off. I made a spanner wrench, and worked great. I'm kinda disappointed though, because the dowel pin barely moved:p and from what I hear, a 97 with 100,000 miles is supusto move a good bit.

Thanks for all the help guys,

Brandon

Done a few including my 97 with 100k miles. Only found one pin that moved significantly and it was on a 90 with 300k miles.

I take the fan off every winter and normally it spins right off with a waterpump pliers on the fan pulley and a channel lock on the nut. This last time it took two of us with the jig wrenches to break it loose.

When you the fan off put Anti-seize in the nut threads. It comes off with little effort next time. I pull my fall every fall and go fanless in the winter.

Well guys,

The job is finally done. The only real problem I ran into was I bent the timing cover when pressing the crank seal in. I tried to straighten it out as much as I could. I ran the truck for a while, and nothing was leaking, so I guess it is ok. Man, was that seal a PITA to press in.

Did you remove the cover from the gear housing?

You can press/hammer it in from the back side, if its off the truck. . You really should change the gasket as well as the seal while its apart.

I'm not sure why Cummin's "seal directions" show this proceedure with the cover on the engine/gear housing. . All of their manuals show the cover off when changing the vibration dampner/crank seal.

The seal directions would work better, on any application except for the Cummins / Dodge application (radiator to gear housing . . tight clearances).

Kudo's on no leaks. Good luck
