I started to hear a metallic rattle so I popped the hood to take a peak. I found 3 of the 6 fan pulley bolts work themselves loose. Has anyone else experienced this? The truck now has 53,000 miles on it. Thanks.

I bet that the pulley and shaft are no good now. That should be a warrantable failure....??
2014 Truck with 50,000 miles should be covered.
That comes on the engine when it is shipped to Ram for installation in the truck.

Are you suggesting that this might be an issue with 13 and 14 trucks and should be checked? Maybe at the next oil change.... BTW SMasters... nice catch..

Is the pulley/ shaft (likely) no good because the holes and threads likely rounded out a bit on the holes/threads for the loose bolts?

I doubt it is something common. But several bolts come loose, that is where/when the damage occurs?

I replaced the bolts (added lock-tite) and tightened the remaining bolts. Not sure if there is damage. From what I can see and hear, everything seems normal. I hope I caught it soon enough that no damage occurred. I had just got home from a 3,000 mile trip pulling the 5th wheel. Never heard the sound on the trip. The next morning I turned on the truck and heard the metallic sound. I guess time will tell, probably when I am in the middle of nowhere.

Mine did the same thing. I was missing 2 of the 6mm hex screws and 1 was backed out about a 16th. Went to ace hardware and bought all new screws and loctite. This happened around 64k have 72k and all is ok. Don’t know how this happened and thankfully none of the screws that came out caused any damage.

Sounds like the Tec must have been distracted when he put those two engines together... Missed a step final tightening check? Not the normal for the people at Cummins.

My 2nd gen I had changed the fan clutch out and did not recheck the pulley bolts, made it 20miles to work had a slight squeak thought it was the hub bearing, I had a new bearing at home figured would be OK, went out for lunch and all the bolts had worked their way out, threw the belt, was not fun.

Did not replace the pulley but its on my list, I did replace the fan hub, along with already pretty new tensioner and belt.

Lock tite, and marked the bolts with a paint marker.

I had the same thing happen at 36,032 miles last Thursday. A slight squeak Wednesday made appointment with dealer, Thursday morning trip to airport(7miles) went from squeak to rattle belt partially shredded, had it tow for Friday appointment. Dealer repair order states four of the six bolts backed out, belt shredded and ac clutch pulley has excessive play. They took care of it under warranty. I like the idea of using the paint marker to keep and eye on them from now on.
