Hello, next week I plan on digging in and tabbing the kdp on my 93. So I was just looking over the how to forums and have a ? What is the best way to remove the fan? I have seen where you just knock the 36mm nut loose and do it that way and I have seen where they take the whole fan assembly off the block. (removing the 4 bolts) To me it looks easier to take the whole assembly off and get it all out of the way. I wouldnt need to round up a 36mm wrench either. Which way is the best to go about doing this? THANKS

I had to pull the fan on a 93 W350 CTD at work. I tried get the fan clutch loose, but couldn't. I ended up pulling the 4 bolts and taking out the whole shebang. It is a tight fit getting it out with the radiator hoses connected, but it's doable. If you don't have nimble fingers, I'd caution away from this route as the lower 2 (I think) bolts are kinda hard to get to.

I bought a wrench at my local napa for $19, sprayed the nut with wd40, and wacked the wrenck with a hamer afew times. in under an hour, including the time it took to go buy the wrench, I had the fan off.

I didn't buy the fan wrench kit, I just bought a regular wrench

hope this helps

Mike

You'll have to remove the bracket from the block anyhow so you might as well leave the fan attached. Not sure you even have to take it out, just lean it up agenst the radiator.

I was taught the fan method. I think the 36mm converts to 1 1/16", because I had one. It takes a good follow through on the hammer swing.

You must be one with the hammer, then you will be ready, Grasshopper.

I use the 1-7/16" wrench I think??

That's what I meant Scott. Just because I can read a serial number off the engine, doesn't mean I can read a wrench that's right in front of my face. :D

two pair of vise grips... one clamped down on the fan pulley and allowed to "wedge" and the other on the nut... works great, and EVERY self-respecting mechanic should have two pair of vise grips in his toolbox!
