2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission fan

got a squealing noise coming from the engine. starts about 1900 rpm's. comes and goes. shut off the truck to look under the hood. thinking fan clutch going. My question is should the fan move freely when I move it by hand or should it have some resistance. When I move mine, it has some resistance but does turn. thanks

Your description of fan resistance sounds normal. Have you checked the pulleys? Could have a bearing going out. Then check everything else that is belt driven. Sometimes you can pull the belt and feel where the sound is coming from by turning each pulley by hand. You will feel it if there is a bearing bad enough to be hear over the engine. Also, take a good gander at the belt itself.



Of course, all of this still does not rule out your fan. I am sure there will be others with more info. Good Luck

Check the bearing in the tensioner pulley.

I had a similar noise that would come and go. Finally narrowed it down to the AC compressor. I figured the bearing was bad. When I went to replace it, two of the three little flat springs that hold the clutch face away from the pulley when it is not engaged were broken and the clutch face was riding on the pulley. The bearing is still OK and since I still haven't come up with the proper puller, I'm running it without the clutch face.

I just changed the fan clutch last night. It was making a squeaking noise through part of its revolution. Turning the blades by hand would generate the noise, so it was easy to locate. Also, after shutdown even with the engine warm, the fan would continue to spin for several seconds while squeaking. And there was almost no resistance turning by hand.
