Thats a nice piece... . but we like to see about 140UM for prefilters... . you get too tight and you can have restriction issues... ...

It says filter... and what you are looking for is a strainer... . that would lead me to believe that it prob has a UM rating of 10-25ish... ...



If you run too fine of a filter on the suction line, this will cause pressure drops under load when fuel flow increases. Pumps like to push fuel, and can handle restrictions much better on this end. You want the suction side of the pump as free flowing as much as pos. You don't want a chance for a vacuum. This will cause cavitation.



Might talk to Eric at Vulcan and see if he has any higher micron cartridges for that filter…. he is a resourceful son of a gun!:-laf:-laf



I do like that see though cartarage of the Mr. Gasket... ...

Well we use NAPA inline strainers in our kits. We found these to be cost effective and work great. But they are a clamp on style. This works just fine... but its not a flashy as the others.



Now if yall want to run the one from Vulcan, i feel it would work... but you would need to keep more of an eye on the gauge for pressure drops at load and pump noise if the filter started to plug up. Knowing this, i feel you would be ok. I have just had some calls from people that ran too tight of a UM rating before the pump, and thought their pump was bad.

Well that won't work for a HPFP... ...



If you had a FASS 150 Series unit... . i feel that would work fine... but the price is kinda high..... our WS-1001 filters go for 21. 95 retail... and they are made by FG.

I have just the fass pump no filters. I was wanting to do away with the Napa strainer that came with the fass pump and go with something like an inline or spin on pre filter/strainer using a remote mount filter base Baldwin FB1311 Filter and a strainer Baldwin BF7759 Filter

i called Mr. Gasket's tech and they said that this filter is 40 Micron

Does the FASS (not the HPFP, but the unit with the wather sep and filter) need a prefilter? I'm not sure how the internal plumbing is set up. Does it pull raw fuel into the unit and then push it through the water seperator and then the filter? Or is the fuel sucked through the seperator and filter and then pushed up to the VP44? If it's the later, doesn't seem to be any need for a prefilter. Seems like there's quite a few folks running them with the Draw Straw II straight from the tank which bypasses the factory screen in the fuel module and I've not heard of any problems.

FASS does not need a pre-strainer... you are correct. The 140um Water Separator is on the suction side of the pump.



The HPFP needs a pre-strainer or debris will get into the pressure regulator and cause all sorts of fun suff to happen... ...

How often should the WS be replaced? I have had it a year so far. . Have emptied it a few times with no debris coming out... Guess that means my tank is pretty clean. .

Is there a local place in Salt Lake City to get these filters and WS's?

IIRC, Indrustrial Injection should have filters.



As far as the water separator, you can back flush them with some gas or other solvent. Fill them up and shake them... . then open up the water drain and repeat.



I always tell people a 1:4 ratio... ... 1 water separator to every 4 filter changes... .

3270 is the part number for the inline 3/8" strainer we use with the HPFP (Not FASS)



I just helped a local shop with an HPFP issue. Low pressure with engine running. I came and updated the pump because it needed it for noise and such... . but after we put it back in, still the same pressure drop after the was started. (18 down to about 10 PSI... . lower if you hit the throttle). I asked if the pre-strainer was changed out. Which it was last month the customer told me. OK... . so i pulled it and tried to blow through it (Which i dont recommend... i can still tasted the dang diesel! haha!) I could hardly blow anything through it! We replaced it with one of our strainer and the pressure jumped up and it was SOLID. We cut the filter open and found a low micron paper element filter. The customer just picked up one and though he would be ok. SO moral..... make sure you know what you are getting with these prefilters. You need to have a 140-144 micron STRAINER... ... not filter. Will save a lot of headaches.

I have a cheap metal can filter from the auto parts store before my Fass. Previous owner installed it. I just looked for one with the biggest body and 3/8" ends. I have NO problems, no fuel starving. I think I spent $7 for the replacement.
