Smelled diesel when I got in from a 800 mile run this afternoon. It seems somewhere today a rock came up and hit the front filter and put a pinhole in it. This unit seems to hang down a little farther than the one on my 04. 5. There is nothing to keep rocks or anything else away from the pump or filters. Any ideas?

I have one on my 02 mounted high (about 1" ) below the top of the front left bed mount. Nothing can hit it from the front. You can possibly cut some diamond plate, use some L-brackets and make a rock shield.

Let us know what you do.

Are you sure it was a rock??? I have over 40k on the current filter with multiple gravel road adventures and no damage (besides rust caused from stone chips)... I have not seen a dent before.

Maybe it was a little bigger piece of road debris??? you know what I'm talking about these days... never know what you're going to see on the highway... I thought it might get ripped off a couple weeks ago... hit a "gator"...

Hard to tell from the picture, but is the FASS tilted back at the bottom???

I agree, you need some kind of skid plate under it.

Out of curiosity why is this unit hanging so low? I didn't think you could mount it where it is due to the spring perch bolt and cables?? Mine is tucked waaayyy up allmost against the bed floor.

I t is mounted on the front bed mounting bracket right next to the frame as high as it will go. Right below the brake cable. It is mounted square also. It is mounted in the same place it was on my 04. 5. I had a FASS 95 on my o4. 5 this one is a 150. Dont know if there is a size diffeence. You can see in this pic exactly how far it hangs down.

Did something change between your 04 and this truck?? I've got the "bigger" FASS that takes the HF6604 filters mounted on my 04 (looks the same as yours), and the filters are tucked up above the bottom of the body???

It's tight against the fuel filler hose, but its still up out of the way...

I wrapped some foam airfilter material around my filters and secured it with wire ties. I then also made a rock shield out of a stainless grate material.

This unit is mounted as high as it can be mounted. Unless I stick it in the bed.

But, problem solved:)

Nice job!

But I still wonder what's different between your truck and mine... you can't even see the filters without getting under the truck on mine... they definitely don't hang that low...

I wonder if its the 2wd/4wd thing?

AIrDog

My Air dog is mounted on the inside of the frame rails. it's tucked snuggly between the train horn tank and the fuel tank (long box). you can't even see the thing unless your on you knees.

The AirDog is a smaller unit, and does mount safely on the inside of the frame rail where it's more protected from road debris getting kicked up from the ft. tires.

I just finished mounting a FASS 95 on my 06' long box. It is knowhere near that low in its final possition, even with using the FASS mounting bracket. I was hoping to get it up higher from where it is now, but the fill tube and vent are in the way. ... ... ... ... ... Maybe build a different bracket for your truck and see if it can be pushed up higher. 1 or 2 inches might make a difference. Are the filters you have spun onto your FASS the recomended filters for it, or are you using something different. The filter pictured looks pretty long ... ... . ?

Yep, and if you have a 4WD, you can mount it just behind the transfer case skid plate for even better protection from road hazards.
