What gears should I run?

I just purchased the FASS fuel setup for my truck, and I've gone to the DPP website and read through the installation manual. What parts to remove and discard. I'm assuming that the stock LP can go, but I'm unsure about the stock fuel filter housing, I know that the water in fuel sensor and fuel heater are located there, adn I didnt see any provoision for them in the FASS setup.

Also for those of you that have this did you follow the manufacturers recommended mount location or are there other places where it fits nicely. I just hate to put it where it wont be seen, and where salt is likely to take its toll.

Which FASS did you buy 95gph or the 150gph?

I bought the 95 gph. I've been reading some old threads and I think I've found the answers. Sounds like I can just toss the old filter housing and not worry about the heater, but what about the water in fuel sensor? I suppose as long as I keep up with filter changes I shouldnt have to worry. Back in the day when I was a working on Ford/International 6. 9/7. 3 diesels I dont recall a fuel heater, and I rarely saw a water in fuel light come on so I suppose its good. Although I do like to keep factory stuff operating whenever possible.

What about different mounting locations? It seems that most people are happy with the recommended location, but still wondering what other people may have come up with.

I'm in the middle of my second New England winter with the FASS and I have not had any reason to believe I need a fuel heater. All the wiring to my stock fuel filter canister (WIF sensor, heater) is disconnected.

If you mount in the recommended location, I'd suggest getting the the rear wheelwell liners and front mud flaps, if you don't already have them. Without either the unit gets really dirty fast.

I did alot of research on your exact question. the stock filter housing will not impead the flow. I originally ran the fass right to the VP, but then later ran it through the stock housing. I noticed no difference in pressures. Cant hurt to have an extra filter in th esystem... .

I just was asking these same questions. I removed the stock fuel filter assembly and stock lift pump. I haven't yet removed the stock fuel feed line but that is next on the to-do list. When you remove the stock canister you need to replace the bolts that hold it onto the intake with shorter bolts. I would tell you the size but I'm still learning metrics. For the time being I just taped the the fuel heater and water in fuel plugs, I plan to get the proper plugs to plug them off. So far I am very happy with my FASS, 23psi at idle, 20 at wot. Good luck!

Does anyone see a problem with mounting the FASS unit in the bed? I checked it out and it will fit nicely in the front driver side corner. I thought of making a case for i out of diamond plate aluminum. The only potential problem I see is shortened pump life from having to lift the fuel higher. If this is a problem I dont want to do it, and I'll just mount it where they recommend. Doug at Perfomance Diesel Warehouse agreed on the possible shortened pump life. I was looking for another opinion, and I was hoping they could provide more specs on thier pump. I cant find anything at DPP to say that it needs to be mounted down near the tank. I also cant seem to find thier tech phone number either.

My FassII mounts tight up against the underside of the bed. I would think that mounting it in the bed would not add a huge load to that pump. However, you will have filters with the regular FASS unit and you'll probably bee a good 12" or so (center to center) above the recommended mounting location. That could be a big difference. Be careful with your plumbing if you go that route.

FWIW, I have worked on mine since installing it and the way it is mounted (under the bed) makes it very easy to access. I would rather save my bedspace considering how open it is under the bed.

the other thing would be air flow. the pump will need some air to keep cool. im sure it would get air in the bed but in a box im not to sure about.

I contacted DPP back in mid January and was basically told that mounting in the bed wouldnt be a problem. However in the interest of saving time and some money I mounted it in the recommended location. Its been working great ever since. Only problem now that its getting warmer as suggested in your instructions crank to start time is increasing when the engines warm so I suspect I have an injection pump diaphram problem.

I have an 03 and mounted mine to the spring mount on the frame, I believe I was the one who helped get that particular area on the OK from Brad, when I got mine, the factory had made changes on the frame and Brad and them hadn't seen one like mine, so I mounted and sent some pics, I had a problem with the brushes after 6,000 miles, they sent some new ones and been rollin ever since, now 60,000 later on the FASS, good luck and good choice, oh yeah I routed right around factory fuel heater, no problems, should be ok with that.
