Hi Guys,

Just thought I'd share some observations from my Talladega trip. It is a little over 500 miles each way. The ambient temps were between 65-80 degrees F and I was rolling around 16K with my 28' camper.
I had recently installed a transmission temperature gauge. Something I had wanted to do for many years. I had read many stories about pretty extreme oil temps in our 5-speeds over the years towing in overdrive. I run Amsoil in mine and have the double Fast coolers.
There are a few long grades in southern TN and northern AL that sometimes require me to drop into 4th gear. I roll in 5th as long as I'm over 1750 RPM. My 12V is turned up some, but I doubt it's over 300HP. It does make 35 PSI boost, but never gets over 1200 degrees EGT on the longest grades in the hottest weather.
I never saw my oil temp go over 200 degrees F on any part of the trip while rolling. Most of the time it was pretty steady at 185-190 degrees F at 75 MPH. It did climb 10-15 degrees when stopping for fuel. I guess the airflow over the coolers really works! The oil temp did not lower when towing in 4th gear, although those stints were only for a few miles of grade.
Are these results fairly common? I am quite happy with what I saw. I'd actually like it to get a little higher to burn off moisture!
Hope you all are enjoying the arrival of Spring,

Seabee

MY NV5600 ran alittle hotter than that, but I had more power going thru it in 6th and was towing close to 24K. I was over 200 most of the time, sometimes up to 225. I ran the Amsoil MTF, never had any real issues with it, but I never had a gauge before the coolers to do a proper pre-post check.

I added a temp gauge when I added the fast coolers, so like bcbender I didn't have a baseline. My oil temp never got hot either, and the temp never gave me a warning of failure, ever. After about 6 transmissions I removed the gauge and installed a fuel pressure gauge in it's place.

Hi Gary!
What was the average mileage you got out of your transmissions? I know you are a HIGH mileage guy and I'm not (just rolled 145K), but I only got 115K out of my first one.................

One of them was a faulty rebuild, only 7k out of it, but otherwise 65-80k. The original gave me the most service, over 130k. In comparison I have almost 700k on my G56 with only one repair needed.

Wow! Really makes that G56 swap effort look pretty acceptable, huh?! The heaviest thing I tow is my 8K camper, so hopefully I'll get at least 100K out of my replacement transmission. I bought it from Standard Transmission out of Texas. The only issue I have had from it is the front seal leaking a little. It will take me 20 years to put another 100K on it, so by then I'll be in the rocking chair anyway!

More than likely the transmission will outlast the rest of the truck. I abused mine by towing heavy in 5th which the NV4500 was not designed to do.

You're probably right. The pickup stays in the garage probably 330 days out of the year. It still has no rust and I hope to keep it that way. Too expensive to replace and too much sentimental value.
Safe travels Gary,
Joe
