I am going to the dealership Friday for the 18-037-04 flash and I want to have the fast idle feature activated.

My question is what do I ask for? is this also a TSB? if so which one?

I know that the activation is done using the DRBIII but does any one now the menu for this procedure?

So many questions not enough hours to ask.

p. s. this is my very first post. Oo.

Welcome. Tell them to activate the manual high idle feature which uses the CC buttons. If they look at you funny just tell them it's already in the computer it just has to be activated. That's all I told them. It worked for me.

The high idle tsb# is 18-004-04 That is the one I gave the dealer when I took mine in works great love it. had the tsb#18-037-04 done at same time worked out very good better mileage smoother shifting.

Good luck,

Hokey

I just had the TSB# 18-004-04 done today. I was under the impression that I would be able to manually control the RPMs with the cruise control buttons. However, when I got in my truck, I couldn't get it to activate. The truck was kind of warm. Does it have to be at a certain temperature for it to work. Can you give me as much info on the TSB as possible. Maybe I wasn't doing it right.

To activate high idle:

1. Start truck

2. Turn on Cruise

3. push "set" (idle will jump to 1000 RPM)

4. push "accel/coast" (idle will adjust +/-100 RPM)

5. Put on geeky smile while sitting in driveway

I had it done friday The way it works for me

1 Start Truck

2 Turn on Cruise

3. I have to depress Go pedal to about 1000 rpm then press set

4 push "accel/coast" to adjust

If your truck is like mine (an early 04) after the dealer reflashes the computer they need to go in and "enable" the feature. I had the same problem, the dealer did the reflash but didn't enable the feature. Fortunetly, I had not left the dealership parking lot before trying it out so I just went in and explained to them that they needed to enable it for me. Five minutes later I was on my merry way.

TSB 18-004-04 is for engines manufactured before December 10, 2003, does this mean that my engine will not need this flash? is it possible that it may just need to be enabled?

My engine was built on 04/13/2004, my truck has a born on date of 04/22/2004 at 0800 hours.

I just hate to go to the dealer and let them "erase and reprogram the Cummins ECM with new software" (as done with both TSB's). Has any one asked to have this enabled without a flash to a truck that was built after the first of the year? And, maybe it's possible that these multiple flashes have caused some of the undesirable effects with this latest flash (18-037-04)

Anyway thanks for the answers.

oh by the way, I love my truck. So far I have had no problems with it, i. e. the dreaded drive shaft vibe, any felt/heard drone, and my fuel mileage isn't that bad (I have never owned a deisel before) 14. 9 hca (hand calculated average) for a truck this size, I only got 14. 7 with my Chevy ZR2 4x4 V6'er.

It won't work without pressing the pedal? That's goofy. Something ain't right. I don't even get in the truck. Open the door, turn key, push buttons, eat breakfast :-laf , leave for work.

Regarding the manual high idle function... ... .

Is this a function that will work on all trucks 04 & up equipped w/ auto or manual trans?

Thanks!

Mike

No, the manual high idle function is for the '04's with an automatic transmission.

And to answer my other question as far as will it work at any outside temperature... Yes it will. I had to take my truck back this morning because as Rosco pointed out, they need to "enable" it.

Thanks for the info Rosco, it works great.

High Idel on 6spd?

I know that I have heard this over and over again that only autos have the high idel but my truck does have a high idel of some sorts. I use my truck for deliveriers and when its cold outside here like around 25 and the truck sits for around 5-10 mins or so my engine temp drops down around 170-175 and a high idel kicks in until it gets warm again. I have tried to set a high idel with the cc but that dosen't work, so the manuals don't have what the autos do, right? Has anyone else noticed this or is this just the feature of a cummins engine, my 02 ho never did this, thanks corey

Not only do they have to install the TSB, they have to activate the feature as well. It took me two trips to the dealer to get it done right.

Corey,

Both the manual and auto transmissions will automatically high idle if the temperature is low but the auto's are the only ones that can be manually adjusted with the cruise control.

Check out this old thread.

I had the dealer reflash my PCM or ECM last May and they didn't activate the feature.

They think just reflashing will do it but it won't.
