Is there any thing on the market to create a fast idle while parked?I know there is for the 24v,i need the 12v. We have air compressors on our trucks at work and need the idle to kick-up to 1200rpm when the compressor engages. Need help a. s. a. p. Thanks.

Mike,
Yes nothing fancy. Basically a cable(I believe old fashion choke cable)that hooks to throttle linkage and routed to inside of cab. Bracket hooked to bottom of dash.
I think this would be best solution for your problem.
Try the archives if you need more ideas. If nothing comes up change your wording.
In the mean time I will try to remember who has this type of set up.

The only problem with the cable is that every time the throttle is pushed down, the ridged cable flexes and eventually brakes like a twig wiggeling it back and forth.

We have set up a few. We found the trick is to get the linkage to move freely when the throttle is press not moveing your cable. ie drill a hole in the linkage and put your rigid cable thru, then put somthing on the end of the cable to catch the hole when the throttle up cable is pulled. When you are drinving the factory linkage doesn't even move your added cable.

I have a manual throttle on the wrecker that I drive and It has a piece of steel beaded chain connected to the end of the throttle wire and the actual truck throttle linkage. Also I've seen light guage flexible steel leader used the same way. Hope this helps. One more thing, Our firetrucks at work as well as the ambulances use electric solenoid controlled throttles to automatically idle the truck up when the amperage usage goes up. They all have cummins diesels, 12 and 24 valvers!

I do alot of offroad driving and I've several guys use bicycle thumb shifters. The cables are adjustable and the control can be tightened to hold idle. You can control engine speed with your thumb while your feet can run the brake and clutch on tricky hills and when loosened up it doesn't interfere. I'm not sure if it will as good on a diesel, the throttle pull on the jeeps is pretty lite.

I know it's kind of a backwoods solution, but here is what I've been doing until I get something else set up. I take a chewing tobacco can and slide it behind the top of the throttle where the cable hooks. You can slide it down and adjust your idle wherever you want it. The only downside to this is reaching under the dash with the door open everytime you want to engage or disengage.

Mike,
I put a fast idle solenoid on my 97
Dodge Cummins, activated by toggle switch
on dash. works good, and is adjustable
for rpm desired

Thanks Harold and others that have replied. Harold where did you get the solonoid, and what did you use for brackets?Pics of this would be great.

I've got a an automatic idler for my 12v from Diesel Solutions or something like that with the company out of Canada. I love it and use it all the time.

It has a button that activates it and a switch that sets the rpm, works great. I would highly recomend it.

I obtained a throttle cable kit recommended by other TDR members from AW Direct that caters to tow truck drivers needs. It does not interfere w/ the actual throttle linkage & the cable is solid wire strands inside plastic sheath w/ a solid wire going thru doing the actuating. Very stout, works well. Different cable styles available also: i. e. turn pull & lock, turn knob push button release etc.
