I have been reading the various posts of all the different quirks of the 03 CTD. Today while my wife was in Dunkin Donuts I thought of a good question. I left home on the way to my daughters house in NJ and half way to her house about 25 miles the CTD was fully warmed up,while waiting for her, the idle goes up and down from about 750 to exactly 1000 RPM!!! What is the story on this??? Just wondering<<>>

It has to do with emissions and it has been posted here before. It's supposed to do that. When mine first did it, I flipped out.

Your cylinder temperatures were probably dropping too low for thorough cumbustion. To prevent the unburnt fuel from "washing-down" the cylinders (& probably for emmisions too), it idles up. If you have an exhaust brake, you can use it to "load" the engine to keep the temps. up.

According to the Owners Manual, it will idle up to 1,000 rpm's after two minutes idling when the ambient temp is below 32 degrees, the coolant temp is below 190 degrees, no foot on the throttle or brake and it's in neutral (MT) or park (AT). Due to the mass of the CTD, it cools down pretty quick in temps below 32 degrees.

Has anyone found a device to idle up the motor when the temp is above 32 degrees and the automatic idle up discussed above will not work?

Yep I found one:D Just cut you a piece of wood like I did for my 00 and wedge it in between the seat and pedal and set it for whatever rpm you want. No electrical connections and its cheap :D :D
